Tribal Employee Agrees with Council Letter to the Editor: The Editorial “Training Es sential” caught my eye, 1st- because I too was fortunate enough to take Anne Morton’s Course; 2nd-I totally agree with the Tribal Council’s decision to use half the Employee Develop ment funds for Tribal Members only. Worried? I hope the Tribal Council is or I ’m sure they would not have taken this type of action. The Tribal Member’s, who are the overall governing body, are and should be the main concern of this Tribe. Their money is going into this organi zation, but yet some cannot get hired because a non-Indian’s friend or relative is always more qualified than “ these people,” which m akes me wonder: Doesn’t 5-10-20-or 30 years of experience and loyalty to the Tribe account for anything? I have known several people who have worked for this Tribe for years and are denied a raise or promotion because of their “lack of educational and technical background.” These people sit in their office year after year training staff that comes and goes. They have the knowledge to train the staff but not for a promotion. Oh no - they need a degree for that. The strength of this Tribe lies mainly in the foresight of our elders who set aside a portion of the Celilo Falls settlement for the future of the Tribe. If they did not do this, we would be volun teer workers today, and then who would we have working for the Tribe? Self-defeating? The In dians have been led around by the nose all of their lives. Isn’t it time we stood on our own feet?
