Barrel Racing: Winning Means Teamwork Marita Johnson Says Horse Shares Her Success by Priscilla Squiemphen Ever wonder how a barrel racer becomes a winner? Tribal member Marita Johnson became one just this rodeo season (1978). Marita who rode her horse Dutch to the number one spot in the WSIRA says that she and Dutch together make a winning team. The season started for her in April and will end in November on Thanksgiving weekend (No vember 23-25), in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she will represent the Western States Indian Rodeo Association, at the 3rd annual Indian National Finals Rodeo. The horse that carried Mar ita to the number one position, is a thirteen year old gelding named Dutch. Although Marita has had Dutch for four years, she said that this year was when she finally learned how to ride him. In 1977 a barrel racing class was held in Warm Springs, with Kay Simmelink instructing. Marita stated, “it was this barrel racing class that I really learned how to ride my horse Dutch” . Marita rode 3 other horses before she purchased Dutch. She started barrel seriously about six years ago, when local ladies and girls started a barrel racing club. Marita was president of the club for two years in a row but now the club is inactive. Marita led the barrel racing throughout the season in the Western States Indian Rodeo As sociation. Her year end total was $1721.96, $422.94 ahead of the . ' > " í t u as second, place finisher Margie Walker of Okanagan, Washing ton. Besides winning the title Marita will receive a buckle and a saddle. In order for Marita to be consistent and win, her horse has to be in tip top shape. Marita said “that she rides him a lot on mountain trails to condition him,” she also said that she and her husband Delford have been teaching Dutch the basics of being a calf roping horse. She said that he’s coming along so Marita Johnson and Dutch are the year end barrel racing team in the Western States well that she might have to give .ssociation. Have heating equipment . checked yearly. Water and electricity combined cause shock. Have dry hands; don’t stand in water. If an ap pliance gets wet, have it serviced. Use a metal fireplace screen. Have the chimney checked and cleaned regularly. Clean up your work bench. Keep flammables away from sparks. Smoke in a chair, not in bed. Don’t store things over the stove. People get burned reaching. Put lighters and matches where small children won’t find them. Use special outlet covers to keep children’s fingers out. Don’t overload electrical outlets. Turn pot handles so children can’t pull them down. -Allow air space around the TV and stereo to pre- / vent overheating. If the TV doesn’t work right, it ' can be a fire danger. Have it checked out. Buy a smoke detector and installit outside your sleeping area. It should have a testing agency - abel. Three grass fires were re ported and attended to in the last two weeks: one behind the Tribal Garage, another in West Hills and the third on the hill side next to Creek Road, the result of an exploded transformer on a tele phone pole. Most recently, the rear por tion of a tribal garbage truck driven by John Simmons burned in the parking lot of Alice’s Restaurant Thursday, October 5, but the cab was spared any damage.
