Barrel Racing: Winning Means Teamwork
Marita Johnson Says
Horse Shares Her Success
by Priscilla Squiemphen
Ever wonder how a barrel
racer becomes a winner? Tribal
member Marita Johnson became
one just this rodeo season (1978).
Marita who rode her horse Dutch
to the number one spot in the
WSIRA says that she and Dutch
together make a winning team.
The season started for her in
April and will end in November
on Thanksgiving weekend (No
vember 23-25), in Salt Lake City,
Utah, where she will represent
the Western States Indian Rodeo
Association, at the 3rd annual
Indian National Finals Rodeo.
The horse that carried Mar
ita to the number one position, is
a thirteen year old gelding
named Dutch. Although Marita
has had Dutch for four years, she
said that this year was when she
finally learned how to ride him.
In 1977 a barrel racing class
was held in Warm Springs, with
Kay Simmelink
instructing.
Marita stated, “it was this barrel
racing class that I really learned
how to ride my horse Dutch” .
Marita rode 3 other horses
before she purchased Dutch. She
started barrel seriously about six
years ago, when local ladies and
girls started a barrel racing
club. Marita was president of the
club for two years in a row but
now the club is inactive.
Marita led the barrel racing
throughout the season in the
Western States Indian Rodeo As
sociation. Her year end total was
$1721.96, $422.94 ahead of the

Marita will receive a buckle and

In order for Marita to be
consistent and win, her horse has
to be in tip top shape. Marita said
“that she rides him a lot on
mountain trails to
condition
him,” she also said that she and
her husband Delford have been
teaching Dutch the basics of
being a calf roping horse. She
said that he’s coming along so
