OCTOBER 2», 1974 WARM SPRINGS, OREGON PAGE 7 Buck Smith - a respected foreman Stanley “Buck” Smith who helped build the green veneer plant at WSFPI (Warm Springs porest Products Industries) is the first tribal member to ac cept the position of foreman at the mill. Actually, he’s been working as swing shift foreman at the green veneer plant for nearly eight years. Smith, whose shift is from 4 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. started out as a lathe operator after con struction of the green veneer plant was completed. He was offered the job as swing shift foreman about a year later, and he accepted. When asked what it’s like to be a foreman, Smith smiled and said, “Well, I’ve got 27 guys on my crew and they treat me real good.” The fore man has to be able to under stand the guys and know how to get along,” he said. “I think that’s the key.” Smith says he tries to train all the men on the crew right. He explained that he wants each man not only to know what his own job is, but to know what the man on each side of him is doing. He also strives to teach each of the men different jobs so that there will always be two or three men who know all parts of the operation. “This is especially helpful if one or two guys are sick,” said Smith, “because when everyone knows two or three jobs there’s al ways someone who can step in.” “It also makes it easier for me since I can go ahead and do my job instead of having to fill in for a whole shift,” he said. Also, if Smith were ad vanced or offered a different position, there will always be two or three men who are familiar with all phases of the operation. After eight years on swing shift Smith indicates a desire to switch to days for a change. It would allow him more time to spend with his family. He also seems eager to tackle the challenge of advancement should the possibility be of-, fered to him. Not only is Smith the first Indian foreman at WSFPI, but he’s the father of the boy (Jason) who won the District competition of the Punt, Pass, and Kick contest in Seattle October 2nd. (See separate story) One can reaidily tell by the way Smith’s eyes light up when he talks about his boys, Jason and Troy, that he is definitely a devoted family BUCK SMITH, swing shift foreman at the Green man. Veneer Mill, carefully watches the product which Buck Smith encourages each man on his crew to learn a number of jobs, urges the employment of safety mea sures to cut down on-the-job accidents, and has good rap port with his crew. He’s a highly valued employee at WSFPI, according to mill per sonnel. Unfortunately the purpose and importance of the information requested on the form are not widely under stood. Spilyay talked with As sistant Superintendent Darrel Wright who oversees the pro curement of funds under Public Laws 815 and 874, and he clarified the function of the form. Public Law 874 (Federal Aid to Impacted Areas) was originally intended to assist those school districts located next to military installations. Many schools were unable to provide adequate services for the children, of military per sonnel who were not paying property taxes. Under Public Law 874 the federal government allocated funds to the “impacted” school district in lieu of property taxes, based on the numbers of children enrolled from the military base. In the early 70’s, P.L. 874 was amended to include Indian Reservations in the classifica tion of “federal installations.7’ Jefferson County School Dis * trict 509-J then became eligible to apply for PX. 87 funds. will eventually be made into plywood, move down the conveyor belt.
