Miss Henthorn, who will be a tpring graduate of Oregon State College, also will instruct classes at the high school in biology and general science in addition to the girl's physical education. TWO OTHERS HIRED Two teachers hired previously In a special - school board meeting held in April were Mrs. Audrey Jones of McMinnvillc who will in struct in the English department on a part time basis and George Halter of Myrtle Point, who re places Lou Hemrlch as vocational agriculture instructor. Halter; as sumes his duties in Amity on July 1. All other members of the Amity Union High School were re-hired for the 1957-58 school year. Farm Labor Office Opens S1LVERTON (Special) - Otis Folk of Silverton, under the Slate Farm Labor sponsorship, is man aging the local Farm Labor office. Offices are on S. Water street near the Silverton down-town sec tion, and opened for business last week, a month earlier than in former years, due lo the unusual weather - rushing the growth of crops. Hoeing of new strawberry acreages, and stringing and train ing in the hop fields are under way. The manager said that berry picking could begin as early as May 28 to June 1. ANGEL ABBEY (Special) Hospital equipment 460 pieces enough for 10 wards of 20 cots ench, has been unloaded at the Monastery building of Mount Angel Abbey for use in event of disaster. Rt. Rev. Abbot Damian Jentgea, O. S. B said that patients at Portland's Providence Hospital will be moved to Mount Angel Abbey in such an emergency. Equipment included bedding. oxgen, three anaesthetic machines, pharmacy, sterilizing room items, triage and X-ray machine. Collon Women Eleet New Staff. New officers elected were, chair man, Mrs. Fred Affolter; vice- chairman, Mrs. Myrtle Carroll; secretary, Mrs. Glenn Olson; treasurer, Mrs. Edith Kaiser Members voted to contribute $5 to Alnlalla ambulance fund. The next meeting of the unit was set for Tuesday. May 28, in the home of Mrs. Lcs Crawford. The lesson for Ihe day will be "furniture touch-ups." Loading was under direction of F. G. Wetherell, assistant medical officer of Ihe state Civil Defense Agency; Major Gen. John Har greaves and Capt. Wallace Whart on! For Double Purpose The hospital unit will be used either during a natural disaster declared by the President or one caused by enemy action, according lo Abbot Damian, member of Ihe Marion County Civil Defense Co ordinating Council. Tentative plans call for using the seminary buildings for the hospital, doctors' quarters in Ihe Brothers' St. Joseph Hall, nurses' quarters in the preparatory School and a receiving center at the Hill tide Gymnasium. Rev. Timothy Sander, 0. S. B. has been appointed custodian of the equipment which has been stored in the monastery buildings where it can be inspected annually by Civil Defense officials. FU Told of Pending Laws CENTRAL HOWELL (SpeciaD- A complete report of legislation of particular interest to farmers that has gone through both Houses of the Oregon Legislature was given by Rep. Guy Jonas to members of the Marlon County Formers Union in session Saturday evening at the Legion Hall in Mt. Angel. At the last meeting in January, a resolution was presented pertain ing lo the use of food crops grown on this coast and urging the Army to contract more of them lot use of the Armed Forces. Sen. Wayne Morse took up this matter with the Armed Forces and a copy of their letter was received explain ing the method of purchasing food items and naming all Ihe cities in the U. S. which depot the various items of food. State President Harley i.ihby spoke, on natural resources, espe dally Hells Canyon Dam and again on land controls and how they will affect the farmer. David L. St. John and Wendell Barnett spoke on the cooperative committee. H. B. Rolph spoke on organiza tional work. Mrs. Clarence Johnson an nounced that Gov. Holmes had de signated the week of May 20-26 as Conservation Week. The annual meeting of the Ore gon Farmers Union Cooperative Assn. will be at Mayflower Hall, Salem, on the evening of May 21. Officers Take Over 2 Units Of Extension WOODBURN (Special) Sofa pillow was the topic for study of both the Woodburn and Union ex tension units Thursday. The Wood burn unit met in the library club rooms with Mrs. Joe Walker Sr. as hostess. Project leaders were Mrs. Frank Chapelle and Mrs. Charles Byers. New officers were installed by Mrs. Eldon Hart and included Mrs. Delbert Seely, president; Mrs. V. L. Reinecke, vice president; Mrs. Frank Chapelle, secretary and Mrs. Lewis Psulson, treasurer. This was the last meeting of the group until fall. Mrs. Charles Pantle was hostess at her country home for the Union extension meeting. Fifteen mem bers were present. Guests were Mrs. Floyd Panlle and Mrs. Merle Henn. New officers installed by Mrs, O. M. Shervem, past president. were Mrs. Lester Henn, president; Mrs. Lyle Skiiler, vice president Mrs. Ray Jackson, secretary- treasurer. Leading the project on sofa pil lows were Mrs. A. Louis Steffan and Mrs. Jack Evans. Next meet ing will be in October. Mill City Eighth Grade to Finish MILL CITY (Special)-Gradua-' tion ceremonies for the eighth grade of the Mill City elementary school will be held Tuesday eve ning. May 28, at the school gym nasium. The ceremonies will be under the general supervision of Mrs. Donald Sheythe, eighth grade instructor. Lawrence Brent is school superintendent." The eighth graders will attend a "get-acquainted party" at the Santiam Union High School Fri day evening, May 10. with the Freshman class acting as hosts. President George Washington re ceived an honorary degree in 1790 from Brown University in Rhode Island. Fairfield Elects FAIRFIELD (Special) ' Mrs. Richard McAnnally was elected chairman of the Fairfield Exten sion Unit at the last meeting in Ihe Waconda school. Other offi cers elected were Mrs. Donald Nusom, vice-chairman; Mrs. Richard Schwcinfurth, secretary and Mrs. Couper, treasurer. Thej will be installed May 28. The profits of the Home Show candy sale were given to the Sil- erton ambulance fund as a .Me morial to the laic Hilda Smith, the club's first president. A cash donation to the general cancer fund also was made.
