Page 6 Section 2 THE CAPITAL JOURNAL' INSIDE HOLLYWOOD Actor George Nader Lashes at Crewcuts, Ivy League Clothing By BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD W-"Men are be coming sheep just like women in the field ot fashion." This bold statement comes from George Nader, the handsome, wavy-haired actor. His studio had suggested that he get a crewcut for his role in "The Dark Shore." "I play an engineer In the pic ture so they thought I would look more natural in a crewcut," he explained. "Ridiculous! Do all en gineers wear crewcuts? Of course not. "What's more, I deplore the large number of men who are ' adopting crewcuts because so many others are doing it. Some have their hair cut short to hide bald spots or make themselves look younger. Why don't they just be natural instead of following the crowd. If your hair looks better cut short, do It hut not because it's the stylish thing to do." That started him on a tirade against the Ivy League stylcsfor men, which are all the rage these ' days. He spoke of the unpadded nhouldors, tho liny lapels, the bold-striped shirts with extra but ton on the back of the collar, the charcoal and other drab colors. "I get a kick out of all the actors jumping on the bandwagon with the Ivy League styles," he said. "The fact is that there's only one guy who looks good In them. That's Cary Grant. The others look terrible. "Most men don't have the fig ures for Ivy League clothes. They are designed for boys, not men. But now men are abandoning their independence and following the fashions blindly. They end up like the women all looking alike and most of them looking pretty bad." Geneva Bank Looted GENEVA Wl Two bandits held up a bank at Geneva's busi est corner Monday night and made off with nearly $10,000 in foreign currency. In their haste, they overlooked more than $50, 000 worth of Swiss currency and gold coins in the safe. The masked thieves fled by car toward the French border after firing two machincgun hursts at pursuers. No one was hurt. Desmond Has Fought 4 Years To Get Columbo Story Filmed By ALINE MOSBY United Press Hollywood Writer HOLLYWOOD (UP) Johnny Desmond, one of televisions big new singer-actors, deserves an award for the most persistent try of the decade: His four-year fight to get the story of Russ Columbo on the screen. The handsome Desmond who, found success two years ago in a TV drama, "Hearts and Flowers , has been obsessed with portray ing Columbo since 1943. But four years. and at least $15,000 later, he has yet to see his long dream come true. "My option on the rights to the story is up In two weeks and I'm desperately hoping something can be arranged before then," ho sighed. "So many times I've been tempted to say to heck with this project. People advise me to give up, but I've invested so much time and money in the idea," Family Backs Desmond Desmond's mother is a Columbo fan, and Johnny bcaame interested in the records and the colorful life ot the singer who was killed In a tragic gun accident, lie met Columbo's sister and two brothers and, ho says, "I've become close friends with them and they don't want the picture done unless I star in it." Desmond bought an option on the Colombo story from an agent who acquired the rights from the family years ago. Johnny has flown from New York to Holly wood several times at his own expense to try and sell the story, but he found no takers. Further confusion developed when Johnny had a falling-out with the agent, and the agent tried to sell the Columbo story with Tony Martin as star. Song Right! Acquired "But I went to the song pub lishers and tied up the rights to Columbo's songs," Desmond said triumphantly. Desmond has just finished his first picture here, a calypso musi cal produced by Sam Kalzman after a scries of successful rock V roll low-budget pictures. Kauman, says Johnny, is ex cited about the Columbo story and wants to see me later In New York about it." "I talked to Frank Sinatra and other independent producers," he said onrncstly. "But I only have a couple of weeks and my $15,000 and four yenrs' work goes down Iho drain." Nadler Owes $81,000 Taxes NEW YORK m Theodore Nadler, the St. Louis clerk who has amassed $152,000 in television quiz show winnings, started hand ing over a big chunk of it to Uncle Sam Monday. He wrote a check for $29,700 1 as a first payment on his federal income tax. He said he figures his 1957 state and federal income tax already stands at $81,000. Nadler boosted his total take to $152,000 Sunday night on CBS TV's "The $64,000 Challenge." He may appear on the program again to try to win more if a qualified challenger shows up. "I'd like to go home and rest up awhile," said Nadler. "I've been coming back and forth for about 25 weeks so I don't know whether I'm coming or going." He said he had taken a year s ! leave of absence for his $70-a- wcek job in an Army supply depot In bt. Louis.
