Page 6 Section 3 , THE CAPITAL JOURNAL Salem, Oregon, Monday, April 8, 1957 INSIDE HOLLYWOOD By BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD un Actor James Edwards is shelving his acting career to be a screen writer. The reason is that Jimmy is a Negro. "Sure, 1 llr.e to act," he re marks, "but I've got to think of security. There just aren't enough good roles that come along (or a Negro actor." He now is writing his third script for films, and he appears to be the first Negro to find suc cess as a screen writer., VAs far as I know, only two others have tried it," Edwards said. Jimmy is a Muncie, Ind., boy, the first-born of nine children. His first yen was to be a schoolteach er. While studying for a master's degree at Northwestern, a coun selor advised him to take a drama course to fill in an hour's free time. The acting bug took him. to New York, where he became one of the pioneer students in the Actor's Studio, Edwards appeared in a play called "The Torch Grows Dim" in Los Angeles, acting to 11 peo ple on the closing night of the run. One of the patrons was Stan ley Kramer, who tabbed the young actor for a leading role in "Home of the Brave." The movie made a name (or Edwards, and he has followed with many distinguished perform ances, the latest being "Men in War" and "Battle Hymn." "But there weren't enough roles to keep me going," he remarked. Edwards thought perhaps writ ing was the answer to his eco nomic problem. Get torn today, Opera Stars' Club Antics Pain Richard Crooks, in Retirement By ALINE MOSBY United Press Hollywood Writer HOLLYWOOD (UP) Op era stars who do stripteases nightclubs brought a groan today of "great letdown to tnc dudiic from one of the greatest tenors of the century. Richard Crooks, Crooks, now 56, retired from singing 11 years ago and lives quietly with his wi(e in the plush suburb o( Brentwood. To hear him sing today one has to attend the A -Saints Episcopal unurcn Beverly Hills. Only there does he unleash the voice that thrinca op era. concert and radio listeners (or nearly 20 years. But Crooks keeps up with cur rent Metropolitan Opera stars, and the slit skirts of Patrice Mun- scl and Marguerite Piazza and nightclub jazz sung by Helen Traubcl, Lauritz Mclchior and Ezio Penza make him (eel "sorry for them." Situation Shocking "To see a singer step into a nightclub! I remember how disap pointed 1 was when Mme. Schu- man Heink toured with vaudeville. Can you feature Mclba or Flag stad or Caruso singing at Las Vegas?" exclaimed Crooks as he basked in the sunshine on the pa tio of his home. . "I know it's their own business, and that they do it for money, but I don't think a nightclub is the proper completion for a ca reer," he commented. "I think singers, at the end of their ca reers, owe it to the public to teach young singers." ing plays for the stage. Next he turned out a movie script called "Silent Thunder." Allied Artists liked it, wanted to produce. The script was submitted to Universal-International for a loan of Audic Murphy. The loan was nixed, but studio bigwig James Pratt liked Edwards' writing. His first job was "The Boy From Korea," a true story of war orphan and a priest. The studio now has him working on a west ern, "Beyond the Pass." "Mr. Pratt told mc I was being hired not as an experiment, but because they thought I could pro duce," Edwards said. "That's the way I want it." DONALD DUCK . Four years ago he and his wife, wed (or 31 years, moved here lrom Pennsylvania. Activities Numerous Crooks is an example of a man who, though retired, leads an even busier and useful life. He's served on the boards of the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera, Hollywood Bowl and Los Angeles Symphony, and is determined that this area will become "the music center of the world," despite cries that Los Angeles is a cultural sewer where residents care only about orange juice and movie stars. He also launched a one-man campaign to gently steer young singers away (rom the fat money in TV and nightclubs and into opera. He judges numerous audi tions for beginners seeking schol arships. Next October Crooks and another retired opera star, Lotte Lehman, launch the first south west auditions for the Met in nearby Santa Barbara. 7281 Easy Cross-Slllch. Easy as play ing ticktnektoe!
