Page 4 Section 2 THE CAPITAL JOURNAL BUSINESS MIRROR U. S. Treasury May Stretch Out Debt If Money Gets Bit Easier By SAM DAWSON . NEW YORK money gets I bit easier, the U. S. Treasury may be able to lift a little of the overburden of floating debt. That would make it and a lot of other people happier. The administration has waged a generally losing battle in its five years against- this burden. And this need to kc:p eternally bor rowing just to stand still at times has been financially embarrassing both to the Treasury and to state and local governments and to cor . porations seeking to borrow in the same market of available funds. If the public debt could be atretrhed out over more years all would breathe a little easier. The amount of debt due or re deemable within one year from now is 122 billion dollars, almost 'half the total. Some 75 billion of that is debt maturing in the next 12 months. The rest is redeemable on demand, like savings bonds, if (he holders choose. That many do . choose is tapping the public till. The one-year debt total is higher now than it was a week ago, a year ago, or five years ago. Lack of actual cash to meet its bills and redeem its bonds has sent the Treasury into the money market to borrow nearly "i billion dollars of "new money" just since! Jan. 1 and this in the face of sizahly higher revenues than in the first three months of 1056. The Treasury has made efforts in the past to lengthen the debt by offering long-term bonds. It has been anxious to avoid com peting for long-term fends with the home mortgage market, in dustry and municipalities. There's a chance now that the Treasury may offer a long mar ketable bond to holder's of 14 bil- i lien dollars of Scries P and G sav ings bonds maturing in the rest of ; this year. The bank proposes that I "at some juncture an offering of I marketable bonds should be made to all remaining holders of F, G, J and K bonds," all of which the Treasury will have withdrawn from sale by the end of this I month. WASHINGTON A Senate subcommittee directed the State Department Thursday to establish I whether newsman William Worthy is the same man who pleaded guilty in 1944 to a draft dodging charge. Robert Cartwright, acting di rector of the department's Bu reau of Security and Consular Af fairs, had testified that a man by that name pleaded guilty in U.S. District court in Philadelphia in June, 1944. to failure to report to a camp for conscientious object ors. Cartwright was before the Sen ate subcommittee on constitution al rights. The group is looking into the question of the rights of U.S. newsmen to cover happen ings inside Red China. William Worthy of The Baltimore Afro-American this week was denied a new passport after he defied a State Department ban and visited Red China late last year. Gooney Birds Find Midway In Ten Days WH1DBEV ISLAND NAVAL AIR STATION UTi Two of those gooney birds, not so goofy after all. made it to Midway Island. The best time: 3,000 miles in 10 days flat. Their flight was part of a U.S. Navy-Fish and Wildlife Service experiment. Four of the big albatross-like birds, which are so large and awkward on the ground and breed so rapidly they have become a menace to air naviga tion on Midway Island, were brought here by Air Squadron VP 40 last month. The Navy has been carrying them to distant points around the Pacific to determine how far they must be taken so as not to return home. The four, their heads dyed pink and banded with other identifica tion, were released here March 23 and headed southwest. Yesterday, the Naval Air Sta tion here was notified (hat two had arrived at the mid-Pacific island, the second following the first by two days. A third was found badly injured in Northwest waters and the Ca nadian Wildlife Service at Vic toria, B.C., ordered it destroyed. The fourth has not been accounted for, but may have found an island all its own, the Navy said. KSI.M Legislature KU1N Middle Show Kliff News-Music KGON Monitor V Enjoy Diiljr .
