Mem, Oregon, Tuesday, February 26, 1957 f ae$ I Section 2 THE CAPITAL JOURNAL Jack Webb Thinks Fans May Save His 'Noah's Ark9 Show Br ALINE MOSBY United Press Hollywood Writer HOLLYWOOD UP) Animal lovers may not see those kanga roos, dogs and horses go Into dry dock with "Noah's Ark" alter all because the producer of the show, Jack Webb, thinks their flood of letters may save the ship. Webb gloomily figured that af ter seven years of success will) "Dragnet" he was in for his first failure when "Noah's Ark" was scuttled by the sponsor. But it's another case of the public rallying to save the program that tells about the experiences of an ani mal doctor. Even Webb was surprised to see the editorials, letters to the edi tors, critics' remarks and fan mail that have poured In since NBC-TV announced the show bad been cancelled. Fan Letters Numerous "Here's 15,000 letters from PTA groups, parents, children, humane societies, dog breeders' clubs many from schools with hundreds of signatures," said Webb, pulling out a file. "All of these letters are unso licited. We made no pitch for mail to save the show. If the network gets an overwhelming amount of mail the network would have to return the show to the air next fall sponsor or not" One Ontario, Canada, viewer summed up the situation when he wrote Webb, "Noah saved the animals now we want to save Noah." Webb launched "Noah s Ark last October on the theory, "there was no other program about ani mals, except those starring one such as "Lassie." Webb a show featured animals of many varie ties who acted as patients at a veterinarian s office. Wild Animals Used The weekly show turned into a difficult venture. Working with trained tame animals is tough enough in show business. But "Noaha Ark featured wild ani mals such as a fawn and a kanga roo. v Jackie, the famed acting lion, was a star of one episode and wandered about the set unleashed. An ostrich was the most tempera mental actor. He kept pecking away at the camera lens and had to be hooded until the camera rolled. The program "took an Infinite amount of patience," Webb admits, but didn't pay off with smash ratings. Fan mail has saved programs before. "I Remember Mama" and "Father Knows Best" were doomed for the shelf until letters from indignant viewers kept them on the home screens. TRANSPORT ARRIVES SEATTLE m The Navy trans port Gen. H. B. Arthur Radford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Mon day his assessment of all avail able information leads him to the conclusion that Soviet Russia, while a first rate airpower, is "still number two in the league." "Our job is to keep it that way," he told the Commonwealth Club. Concerning the threat of war. Kadlord said: "Actually, the most dangerous threat to United States security is that of a surprise atomic attack by the Communist bloc. The Com munists probably realize, how ever, that we are maintaining such power that their aggressive use of armed force would bring down up on them a retaliation so quick and so devastating that they could ac crue no possible advantage. It would not serve the self-interest of any aggressor to attack us." Supreme Court Rules Against Obscenity Law WASHINGTON UH The Su preme Court Monday unanimously struck down a Michigan law which made It a crime to sell books deemed to contain obscene language. The law was attacked by Alfred E. Butler, a Detroit dealer who was fined $100 Bfter selling to a ponce inspector a book called "The Devil Hides Outside." The book was written by John Howard Griffin, who lost his sight irom a worm war II injury and suddenly regained it last January after being blind for 10 years. Justice Frankfurter delivered Monday s decision. He said Michigan was In effect burning the House to roast the pig in enacting the anti-obscenity I aw. I "We) have before us," Frank-1 furtor said, "lesislatlon not rea sonably restricted to the evil with wnlch it is said tu deal. The inci dence of this enactment Is to re duce the adult population of Mich igan to reading only what is fit for children. "It thereby arbitrarily curtails one of those liberties of the In dividual, now enshrined in the due process clause of the 14th Amend ment, that history has attested as I the indispensable conditions for the maintenance and progress of I a free society." Yakima Peach Yield to Drop YAKIMA W - Yakima Valley peach growers now expect only a 25 to 30 per cent crop this summer because of January freeze dam age to buds, County Extension Agent W. A. Luce said Monday. That would be a crop of between 7,500 and 9.000 tons, he explained. The state normally produces 40, 000 tons of Hales, Elhcrtns and other varieties, of which about three-fourths are grown In the Yakima Valley.
