Beavers See Aid In Swap Portland Might Get Bilko in Cubs' Deal PORTLAND Hi - The Portland Beavers will be stronger because of the Brooklyn-Chicago deal that switched Portland s working agreement from the Dodgers to the Cubs, Portland general man ager Joe Ziegler believes. "A wonderful break for Port land." said Ziegier, asserting that Portland will get first call op any player the cubs do not want. Ziegler said field manager Bill Sweeney will stay on, and there will be no change in home owner- snip of the Coast League club, Bilko Mentioned "We have some Chicago-owned players in mind who we figure will help us, but we can t reveal their identity until the deal has been approved," Ziegler said, A spokesman for the Chicago Cubs said at the Cubs' training camp at Mesa, Ariz., that Chi cago does not plan to leave any promising players at Los Angeles for the Dodgers to capitalize on, That spokesman mentioned Steve Bilko, the slugger who played a big part in the Los An geles drive to the pennant last year. He said Bilko may go to Portland, although that is not cer tain. On the other hand, Ziegler said, Portland will have to give up some players owned by Brooklyn. These include holdovers Rene Val- des, star right-handed pitcher; outfielder Bob Borkowskl and in fielder Jim Baxes. Merriman to Retire Newcomers, who had been slated to report to Portland, in cluded infieldcr Roy Hartsfield, catcher John Roscboro, and pitch ers Richard Hanlon, John Jancse, Ralph Mauriello, Glenn McMinn and Lawrence Sherry. Ziegler said he also had re ceived confirmation from outfield er Lloyd Merriman that he will retire instead of reporting to training camp this season. The general manager added that pitcher Dick Fiedler, who had a 2-6 record last year, had signed his 1957 contract.
