Career Women Shouldn't Wed, Asserts Actress Anne Bancroft By ALINE MOSBY United Press Hollywood Writer HOLLYWOOD (UP) Actress Anne Bancroft, freshly divorced, thinks she knows one reason why so many Hollywood marriages fail: Career women marry and they shouldn't. The newswircs carried the story last week: "Anne Bancroft di vorced by contractor Marty May on grounds her career interfered with the marriage." Today, the actress sat in Goog le's Itesiaurant, a young actors' hangout, and talked unhappily about career women. Sociologists may think Anne s troubles are representative of those females who arc a problem of this cen turywomen who have a career drive that conflicts with the con ventional duties of marriage and motherhood. Actress Offers Advice 'A woman with a drive and HENRY By Corl Anderson ambition for a career never should marry," she said firmly. "It's best to be single while you are finding yourself." Anne, wearing black toreador pants and a black sports car jacket, sat moodily. "You see," she said earnestly, "to be a good actress is a ter rific drive for me. Why do I have the drive? That's one of the reas ons why I want to be alone to find why I have to be an actress. "Being an actress takes a lot of attention and time and energy, she continued. It's an old corny phrase but you can't serve two masters. If you really love your career, if you have this drive, you must ful fill yourself in this way. Ambitions Numerous . "I have more ambitions than the average woman and I am deep and sensitive and 1 must have peace, I must be alone," she add ed breathlessly. "Despite what men say, men and women are born equal. Just as many women hove talent" She noted bitterly: "Marriage consists of pleasing a man. That's what he wants." Anne is moving to New York because she needs a "change." She'll concentrate on theater and television and commute here for piclures. "I'll be lonely living alone," she said, "But I was lonely when I was married." The actress ran her hands through her short, black hair and admitted, "Sure, there are men in my nie. f our. My lather, my agent, my press agent and my psychiatrist."
