FAY WASHINGTON Wi President Eisenhower has accepted swiftly the resignation of Robert Tripp Iloss as assistant secretary of de fense. Ross has been questioned by a Senate committee about military contracts awarded to firms headed by relatives. Ross told Eisenhower he had done nothing wrong or improp er, but "I feel that my future ef fectiveness" in the office "has been impaired." Within a few hours after being Informed last night of Hoss' let ter of resignation, (he President wrote him a three-paragraph let ter accepting the resignation, ef fective Feb. 20. Ross, whose wife is president of Wynn Enterprises, Inc., and whose brother-in-law H. D. Wynn heads affiliated firms, has been on a self-requested leave of ab sence since Jan. 11. Ross himself has been an officer of several of the companies, but said he sev ered all those connections in l!)r2 when he was elected to Congress. His letter lo Eisenhower said he had been guilty of no wrongdoing. In his appearance before the Sen ate Investigations subcommittee Wednesday, he said, "Nothing was brought to my attention to indicate that the committee had found any evidence of any wrongdoing, im proprieties or conflict of interest on my part." It was thought some bottles of loda pop may have been taken. Burglars Carry Away Big Safe A safe weighing 5(10 pounds and containing about $500 was carried away by burglars who entered the Pink Elephant tavern at Four Cor ners between one and live o'clock a.m. Friday. A truck driver who delivers bak ery supplies lo the tavern discov ered the burglary when he visited Uic tavern about five o'clock. Entry had been made by forcing the rear door. The safe had been moved from the building on a small hand-propelled beer truck to the wailing vehicle. The delivery man notified the lale police and the police relived the Information to Ihe sheriffs office. Roth are Investigating. White House press secretary James C. Ilagerty told newsmen the President did not request Ross' resignation. In addition to the letter from Ross there was one by Deputy Secretary of Defense Reuben Rob ertson, acting in Ihe absence of Secretary Charles E. Wilson, tell ing Eisenhower that he was trans missing Ross' resignation request. Actually, the whole exchange was handled by telephone, appar ently to expedite matters. Both the Pentagon letters and the Pres ident's reply from Thomasvillc were dated yesterday. Sen. McClcllan (D-Ark), who beads the Investigations subcom mittec, had no immediate com menl about the announcement.
