Page 6 Section 2 THE CAPITAL JOURNAD Salem, Oregon, Friday,' February 1,1957 Demo Senator Disputes Ike's 'Did-Best'Quip By ERNEST B. VACCARO WASHINGTON Itf-Sen. Mans field ID-Mont) said today "the record" will show he ottered pro nosnls for meeting the Middle Kast crisis months before the at tack on Ecynt. He said his party stands ready to write chances into the Eisen hower Middle East resolution "to nnkc it more effective. Two days nco, President Eisen hower told his news conference that critics of Secretary of State Dulles have not pointed to any specific errors nor offered any conslructi') alternatives to Dul les' policy actions in the Middle East. Dulles is urging quick Senate adoption of a resolution to cm power the President to use mili tary forces and economic aid to combat any Soviet expansion into the troubled area. It was ap proved overwhelmingly by the House Wednesday. Sen. Wiley of Wisconsin, senior Republican on the Foreign Rela tions Committee, said Dulles has come through often-rugged Dcm- ocratic questioning "with his rec ord untarnished and his smile as bright as ever." Mansfield, assistant Democratic leader of the Senate and a mem ber of its Foreign Relations Com mittee, said critics of the resolu tion are ' motivated by a desire to give it substance." - Mansfield said he offered sug gestions for averting the Middle East crisis in a series' of speeches Inserted in (he Congressional Roc ord as early as last August. He said he wants the United States to take the lead in getting the United Nations to set up a commission to control arms ship ments to the Middle East, and to take a more active role in trying to settle the Arab-Israeli feud. Denies Statement in Death of Sisters L. A. Working On Electron ic Ballot Count LOS ANGELES Wl Officials of Los Angeles County arc now working on a method to count bal lots electronically and speed up election results. . Ben Hitc, county registrar of votes, said that if such a method Is adopted the precinct election boards "should bo home and in bed by 8:30 p. m." of an election day and that complete results should be available within per haps six hours after the polls close. This system, Mile told an inter viewer, should be a great asset anywhere in the country where vole counting machines ore not used. Besides being fast, it saves money. Under the present laborious tab ulation system, precinct boards usually work through the night counting ballots. Complete returns are not available for Los Angeles County until 4B hours or more aft er Die polls close. Hito said 10 electronics com panies from various parts of the nation have submitted their ideas for the kinds of systems that 'could be used. County officials arc evaluating these proposals. Details of the various systems arc not being disclosed at this time on tho theory that this would be unfair to the companies work ing on tho project, said Ilitc, 3', CHICAGO Edward (Bennlc) Hcdwcll (right) stands with Ills attorney, Davltf Hrndsliaw (center) before bench tn criminal court today where Bed well retracted a Rtatemcnt he had signed for Sher iff Joseph Lohmnn (with tflnssrn at left) In which he said he helped to debauch and kill the Grimes sisters. Hearing was continued until to morrow (AP Wircphoto) Pan-Am Asks CAB Anew for Portland Stop WASHINGTON Ml Pan Amer ican World Airways Friday asked the Civil Aeronautics Board for a review of its request for access to Seattle and Portland in com petition with Northwest Airlines on the direct Great Circle route lo the Far Kiisl. In a brief to the CAB, the air line said a 20 per cent increase annually in air traffic across the Pacific would guarantee opera lions free of government subsidy it the route is approved. Pan American also contended thai the age of "pure jet com mercinl transportation which it will start in less than three years "demands the discontinuance of restrictions on U.S. trans-Pacific service." "Tho intercontinental jets which make ponds out of oceans would he wasted on island-hopping, PAA said. "This would deprive the public and the government of the efficient services the airline is capable of." The jet is expected to operate non-stop between Tokvo and Seat tle but I lie (t(0 to 1,200 added miles to California would prevent non-slop operations. Pan American described its present course via mid-Pacific is lands as "an antiquated route pat tern. . . 1,000 miles longer (or California and 2.000 miles or more for the rest of the United Slntes."
