On the other hand, some big department stores cut prices to meet the discount house figure. Others push their trade-in plans, their cut price warehouse sales, or trim some costlier services. Smaller stores fight back to meet the competition of lower prices. A group of 100 home furnishings retailers in the Rocky Mountain and Pacific Coast states has just been formed to do mass buying of furniture, carpets and appliances. This way they hope to offset the inroads of the discount catalogues. But what will happen to the small specialty stores, away from the big distribution centers, as they try to meet the competi tion of the lower prices carried in the catalogues of big chains and discount nouses? Patterson, Dodge presi dent, said dynamic new principals ot auto design and manufacture, with exciting new applications of materials, have been combined to produce an advanced design 1U57 Dodge with "entirely new riding characteristics, virtually free of vibration, noise and rood shock." The same outodynamic princi ples responsible for achieving this new driving sensation in the l(J.r7 Dodge also made possible many of the car's swept-wing styling ad vances. An all-new suspension system and newly designed frame give the 1957 Dodge a much lower center of gravity, providing road-hugging qualities formerly found only in high priced sports cars. Not only Is this a major contri bution to highway safety, but It also enabled Dodge to reduce car height by as much as five inches, so. that the new Lancer luuiitop stands less than 55 inches high. ' ; Fourlecn-inch lubeless tires are standard on the new Dodge. The larger tires, mounted on smaller 1 but wider sofcty-rim wheels, pro-1 vide a double tread on the road surface for greater safety. ' The new low look of the 1957 Dodge has been accomplished while maintaining interior head room and full road clearance. Floor of the car is recessed in the frame, accounting for space saving. The old air cleaner that used to perch on top of the engine has been replaced by a new paper-element cleaner that fits against the side o( the engine, permitting lower hood lints.
