They will be gone two weeks. Both are school teachers. NEW YORK uf-An open letter to Steve Allen: Dear Steve: Word comes to this department that you rc planning to book tl- vik Presley, the hysterical shout- er of rock n roll, for your second I regular weekly NBC-TV show Sun- day evening, July 1. Why? Until now I've refrained from joining in the chorus of public and critical condemnation of Pres ley's primitive exploitation on the Mihon Berle show a couple of weeks ago. My theory is that characters like Presley thrive on a bad press. The more they're! condemned, the more people arej aroused to watch and listen to ,: r. them. Obviously, however, my think ing that something unpleasant . would go away if ignored was i ; wishful and foolish. For now, soi soon, you apparently plan to bring Elvis the Pelvis back to a national television network to titillate teen age girls and cause numbskull! boys to imitate him. I'm not taking a moral stand in this case. Better watchdogs than I already have bayed a warning and the patrols are out. My purpose in asking why you're booking Presley has anoth er basis. Your television career has been marked by a high sense of valor and a great respect for talent. Preslev eertainlv is not : funny though that is not my com-L plaint against him. My argument1 against his appearance is simply lack of talent. I can't for the life1 of me see why you want to have! such an untalented buy on your program. A very small but very noisy mi nority of the immature have been infected in recent years by the digga-boom convulsions known as rock 'n' roll. There is no talent involved in their rigorous efforts at self-torture. Possibly you feel that Presley I should put on one of his perform ances on your program because he is somehow an American phe-i nomenon." There are lots of American phenomena. One, fori example, is Niagara Falls. You could train TV cameras on the i Falls for five minutes and you'd have a phenomenon all right but you wouldn t have much of an au dience left. Because the Falls, for television purposes, are untalent ed and noisy and all wet. , KSI.M KOCO 1 KGAY , KOIN " K(!W ' KEX RALPH DEMPSEY HOME RICK RE ALL, Ralph Dempsev. formerly of Rickrenll, but now a resident of the Philippine Is lands, is in the United States to transact business and visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs.' Harry Dempsev, also his brother, Ar thur and family, as well as other relatives and friends.
