Salem, Oregon, Thursday, June 14, 1956 THE CAPITAL JOURNAL Section 3 Page I ' Outlook in Electronics Field Varied Consumer Aspect Soft While Other Phases Now Booming By SAM DAWSON ' CHICAGO 11 The electronics Industry sprawling all the way from parts for guided missiles to lv sets and automatic washers is eyeing the general economy warily today. Here, where per haps a third of the nation's out put centers, they stress a sharp cleavage in outlook. That part of the industry deal In? with the public directly TV- radio and many home lapoliances is on the soft side, waiting for the consumer to regain all the confidence in the future he showed last year. But that part supplying indus try and the military sees nothing to fear just now but the remote chance of a real recession. v Sales of TV sets and many- home appliances are down from last year, and inventories are heavy, although some of tho TV companies here say rather smug ly thev are in a better position than the auto industry because they played the production side of the game more cautiously. Plant shutdowns and layoffs are sprin kled through that part of the in dustry that dc.ils with the con sumer. And price cutting at the retail level is notable. Some of the companies here have full lines. They make TV and radio, and also ranges, refrig erators, built-in ovens, washing machines. Others specialize, say, in just TV and radio. In both cate gories, most supply both the con sumer and industry and the mili tary, making up in industrial and defense sales. Some show curious deviations in the ratio of profits to sales. Motorola reports higher sales hut slightly lower earnings in the first quarter of this year. Zenith Radio reports both sales and earn ings lower. Admiral, with a drop in sales, reports higher first quar ter profits. ' Industry spokesmen have a number of explanations for the slump in TV set sales, especially of the larger sets. The consumer may be playing it cautious just now, disturbed by recession talk, or he may already have all the time payments he can handle. Some in. the industry blame "another , color scare," like the one late in 1953 that chilled the Christmas sales of black and white sets. Others are putting their bets on the new portable TV sets to pull the industry back onto the uphill track this fall. Rough going in the industry has led to a number of mergers and to the folding of smaller com panies. The electronics industry as a whole, despite any stumbling now and then by one of its divisions dealing with the fickle public, looks for steady growth. Leaders estimate it will do a six billion dollar business this year, com pared with 300 million in 1939. Destroy Japan er of Slow KOBE, Japan W Ikazuchi, first Japan-built destroyer since World War II, is a slowpoke. The 1.070-ton escort destroyer on its maiden cruise provided a junket for scores of old navy officers living in the Osaka-Kobe area. The men who remember Japan as a naval power say the ship compares with warships of the navy if you go back to 1000. Ikazuchi cruised at 20-25 knots in the quiet Inland Sea. Four bigger destroyers leased to Japan by the U.S. Navy can do 35. "What can a destroyer with 25 knots speed do?" one veteran murmured. "A modern subma rine may outrun it." Mochitsura Hashimoto, who cap tained the submarine 1-58 and sank the U.S. cruiser Indianapo lis in July 1945, said: "wait a bit. We'll make one making 40 knots before long." Father Emu Has Troubles EVANSV1LLE, Ind. tfl-Hiram, the papa emu who has had his share of hatching troubles at Mes ker Park Zoo, has a new brod of five babies. Don Davis, zpo director, said the brood, now about a month old. is the largest ever hatched by Hiram and Emma in their 19 years at Mesker. The hatch came from nine eggs. The only other surviving off spring, hatched in 1954, is in a separate pen with Emma. Hiram hatched two chicks from nine eggs in 1953, but both died.
