Salem, Oregon, Wedr$sda$ March 21, lio6 m a THE CAPITAL OURNAfi 6 0 Silverton Woman's Club Entertained SILVERTON At the past week's meetine of the Silverton Woman's club at the First Christian church social rooms, a leticr was read from the president of district No.b : .Mrs. Vern Van Horn ' Port land, announcing the all day dis trict meeting, Thursday, April 5, at Monmouth. Delegates, from Sil verton will be appointed in the near future. Plans were favored for baying a tea set for the club. As an entertaining and educative program feature, Mrs. George Mc Neill demonstrated the psycho logical and mental hygiene phase of her topic: "New Words for an Old Song," in dramatic -renditions of brief articles. Special visiting guests- at the meeting were Mrs. Alvin Legard and Mrs. Lily Hallock of Silverton, and Mrs. Guy Hubbs of Dodson, Minn., who is a house guest of the Frank Hubbs and with her hus band, is returning home from a winter spent in Costa Mesa, Calif. A social hour was observed, with tea hostesses, Mrs. Charles Hoyt, Mrs. George Christenson, Mrs. P. L. Brown and Mrs. Edward Zet-zewitz. WILLAMINA The Civic club will meet Thursday, March 22, at 2 p.m. in the sub-auditorium of the Lutheran church. 1 Mrs. Ray Morrison will bo chairman. . .The Girl Scouts will present the pro gram. 4 MOLALLA District No. 2 FL convention to be in Salem May 12, was discussed at Molalla FL club meeting, Friday evening. Mrs.. Oleta Mautz and Mrs. Frances, Wells were elected delegates to the convention. Mrs. Doris Rich ardson, Miss Jean Peterkin and Mrs. Audra Marson were named on the auditing committee. The ' club discussed giving a dance for the Theta Rho club, with a defi nite date to be announced later, Also up for discussion was the scrapbook. Hostesses for the meeting were Mrs. Bonnie Corbin and Mrs. Lora Lee Stafford. The hostess gift was received by Mrs. Betty Wvnn. St. Patrick's day motif was carried out in refreshments, favors and flowers. AURORA Memners of the Aurora Women's Club served ham dinner family-style Saturday evening, March 17, to the public, in the Aurora American Legion hall, with Anita Ostborn, Canby high school exchange student from Sweden as guest speaker. Mrs. Ernest Wright was com mittee chairman in charge. The first oublic doscriDtion of the 22,600-pound 'Vanguard rocket was given yesterday in a joint Navy-Glenn L. Martin Co. an nouncement. Martin is building the three stage rocket, which is scheduled for launching from the Air Force jnissile test center at Cocoa, Fla., Visitors Garner , Major Share of " Elks Bridge Wins Portland, Corvallis and Salem divided top honors at the March master point competition of. tne local unit .of the American Con tract Bridge League . In a nine-table duplicate tour nament at the Elks, club winners were Mrs. L. O. Gigandct and Mrs. George Horton, both of Portland, and Mrs. Paul F. Burris and R. D. Hutchinson of Corvallis. In the master pairs champion ship being run off by the Elks Duplicate Bridge club in two ses sions, leadership at the halfway mark went to Mrs. Arthur L. Lewis and Elmer 0. Berg. . Junior pairs championship also is1 being decided in two sessions at the Elks club with Mrs. Doug las Chambers and Mrs. Richard Chambers taking a lead in the first tournament. Corvallis also carried away a major share in the top scores of the second March master point of the Elks Dupli cate Bridge club'. Winners were Mrs. R. D. Hutchinson of Corval lis and Mrs. Marlin Thompson of Gold Beach; Mrs. Lucetta Mc Coskrie and Mrs. Jose Moritz, both of Corvallis; Jack Shepard of Corvallis and William E. Kim sey; and Mrs. Paul F. Burris and Ellis H. Jones. AURORA TEAM PLANNED AURORA The Aurora Commu nity club will again sponsor the Aurora baseball team. Al Mendenhall, player manager, is linins uo Dlavers. Aurora will play in the Tualatin Valley League again this year. Martin said the Vanguard will be the "first liquid fuel rocket de signed to be controlled without the use of fins," an innovation termed scientific break - through by Martin engineers." . The rocket will be guided by. a power plant installed on a semi pivot, making possible directional changes in the stream of power from the rocket's tail. This plant will guide the rocket. The first stage will boost the rocket practically s t r a i g ht up about 38 miles above the earth. The second stage, which fits just above the first, will ignite immed iately upon separation and proceed on a progressively more inclined trajectory to an altitude of about 140 miles. At a predetermined point in its flight, the second stage rocket will jettison its streamlined nose encasing the third - stage rocket, leaving it and the satellite' exposed. After its burnout, at about 140 miles altitude, the second - and third-stage combination will coast upward until It reaches the satel lite's orkit 300 miles above the earth and about 700 mites horizdh tally 'from the launching point. Stage 3 be gfcen a spinning motion to insure stability on its orbit before the second-stage rock; et drops off. Stage 3 has the task of increas ing speed up to 18,000 miles an hour, a velocity high enough to counteract the earth's .gravitation al pull. .
