new in Washington:
Rep. Herbert C. Bonner, the
North Carolina Democrat, couldn't
find his tongue when he was sub
stitute presiding officer over the
house. Unaccustomed as he was,
he called out from the high chair:
' The gentleman from Holifield,
Mr. California." Bonner turned a
burn and corrected himself. He
said he meant Rep. Chet Holifield,
Democrat from California.
A' gang of congressmen . were
entertained the other night at the
Russian Embassy. A fine time was
had by all, with the group looking
at films of Russian folk dances.
And incidentally, the, Americans
lapping up vodka and the Russians
more than tolerating fine old Ken
tucky bourbon.
Gene Davis of the American
Automobile Association has dug up
an old copy of the AAA camping
and camp site manual. It was put
out in 1924 and is interesting
enough to reprint. "
The pamphlet said about food
..."Asparagus purifies the blood.
Celery acts on the nervous system.
Tomatoes act on the liver. Spinach
is good for the kidneysT And

nia." You don't have to write all
the above down.
Pretty soon', the high and mighty
of Washington can walk right down
the street and order tailor-made
suits from England. A British firm
has bought a couple of Washington
stores. The slogans will be "British
tweeds, tailored the American
way." Or something like that.
The Postal Service News has a
couple of pretty cute chuckles.
Out in Quitman, Mo., Postmaster
Ethel G. Wright was a little puz
zled when a kid asked for a
"long two-cent stamp." The lady
postmaster delivered the goods
when she found out the little girl
had in mind two one-cent stamps.
And a vacationing v patron left
this note for Lowell, Ark., rural
mail,, carrier Elza R. Tucker:
"I'm leaving for a month, so

sentatives of Japan's building con

Fulgencio Batista received U.S.
Secretary of the Navy Charles
Thomas Tuesday.
Thomas stopped here briefly en
route to the American naval base
at Guantanamo where he will par
ticipate in exercises of the Navy's
latest atomic war fleet units.
MANILA, P.I. (UP)-Two treas
ure hunters were buried alive and
two others were injured when a
tunnel caved in, it was reported
today.
Reports reaching Manila said the
four men were "digging a tunnel
leading to the treasure" believed
hidden by retreating Japanese sol
diers during the battle for the
liberation of the Philippines in
1945. .
TOKYO (UP) A raging fire de
stroyed 1,482 homes in the Japan
ese sea coast town of'Noshiro to
day, leaving an estimated 8,000
persons homeless.
The flames, fanned by brisk
winds, spread rapidly and razed
the city's business section. There
were no reports of deaths, but 12
were injured. Noshiro is a city
of 50,000 population in northern
Akita Prefecture.

school board and budget commit
tee here boosted teachers' pay
for next year, then adopted a
resolution endorsing a state sales
lax.
The resolution proposed the
sales tax as a means of financing
schools, with properly taxes to be
reduced accordingly.
' Increases for teachers . ranged
from $150 to $500 a year.

Reclamation Bureau engineers
had estimated that the dam, one
of the principal features of the
North Unit of the Deschutes Rec
lamation Project in Central Ore
gon; would cost $724,104.
