W. R. Furtick, OSC agronomist, reports effective control of sour dock and other broadleaf weeds with new "butyric acid formul ations" of 2.4-D and MCP. Both 2-4-D and MCP are widely used to control broadleaf weeds in grass and grain crops but injure alfalfa, clover, lotus and other legumes. The new formulation developed by a British scientist has the same week-killing power that caused no apparent damage to legumes in one-year trials at Corvallis and Astoria. r-ven alfalfa seedlings were un damaged by spray applications that gave elfective weed control. Futrick reports, (tales up to three pounds per acre ot the new formu lations caused no damage to either alfalfa or -clover, but lotus seed lings showed some damage at the higher rate.
