BijI Problem of
The Democrat!
By JMF.S MAKl.OW
Associated Press News Analyst
W ASHINGTON i-Adlai Steven
eon himself, without saying so. put
his finger on the No. 1 problem
facing the Democrats in trying to
persuade the voters to throw the
Kepuhlicans out in 1956.
"America," he said in a speech
Saturday nisht,'"is well and strons
above all nations in all limes. We
are the luckiest people in the world
and we know it."
If that's the case, the voters
might ask. why should they take a
chance on changing administra
tions in next November's election''
Stevenson's reasons seemed to add
up to this: "We can do every
thing better."
He was very vasue on how. That
can't be held against him at this
time. This was his first speech

oi uregont major weed problems
in pastures and legume hay and
seed crops are shaping up at
Oregon State college.
W. R. Furtick, OSC agronomist,
reports effective control of sour
dock and other broadleaf weeds
with new "butyric acid formul
ations" of 2.4-D and MCP.
Both 2-4-D and MCP are widely
used to control broadleaf weeds
in grass and grain crops but injure
alfalfa, clover, lotus and other
legumes. The new formulation
developed by a British scientist
has the same week-killing power
that caused no apparent damage
to legumes in one-year trials at
Corvallis and Astoria.
r-ven alfalfa seedlings were un
damaged by spray applications
that gave elfective weed control.
Futrick reports, (tales up to three
pounds per acre ot the new formu
lations caused no damage to either
alfalfa or -clover, but lotus seed
lings showed some damage at the
higher rate. A safe one-pound rate
on lotus, however, controlled more
than 90 percent of broadleaf weeds.
Biggest benefits- to Oregon, Fur
tick believes, will come from
control of sour 'or curly) dock
that county agents list as the worst
pasture problem in central and
southern Oregon, the Willamette
Valley, and especially on the
coast.
