Congressman Walter Norblad has so been informed by the Navy. Let's not protest again. Kor a more substantial enshrinemcnt, than any material one, is in the hearts ol her countrymen. For more than 50 years the people of Orecon and the Navy have worried about what ought to be done with the Oregon, for some years she drooped sadly in Portland harbor where they tried to make a shrine of her. It didn't work out, and she was taken to Guam where she is to be sold for junk. But her material destruction need not be the end of her, and will not be if her story can be revived and her tradition handed down, as it must be, to future generations. An older generation knows, and a younger vaguely knows, that the old ship is famous. But few know that she is twice famous for the part she played in the Spanish War, and for the established fact that her long voyage from San Francisco around Cape Horn to join Admiral Sampson's fleet off the Cuban coast was the main inspiration for building the Panama Canal. That voyage and the valiant part she had in the Battle of Santiago are history. No one who was a youth then can forget an incident of that voyage. For many days no word had come from the Oregon. She couldn't be located, and the Navy was uneasy. Perhaps prowling Spanish ships had gotten to her. Cable messages were broadcast to the Oregon's commander, in the hope that one would reach him. And then this one came back from Captain Charles E. Clark: "Don't tangle me up with instructions. I'm not afraid of the whole Spanish fleet." John James Mcehan, a poet of the day, wrote "The Race of the Oregon": Dents out! and a prow turned toward the South, And a canvas hiding each cannon s mouth, And a ship like a silent ghost released Is seeking her sister ships in the east. When your bovs shall ask what the guns are for, Tell them the talc of the Spanish War, And the breathless millions that looked upon The matchless race of the Oregon. And this from Arthur Guiterman: ' Thev held her South to Magellan's mouth, Then East they steered her, forlh Through the farther gate of the crafty strait. And then they held her North. Six thousand miles to the Indian Isles! And the Oregon rushed home. Her wake a swirl of jade and pearl, Her how a bend of foam. . ' "Oversfiadowetl . 8 8 fl?A MJ mWT0Kt ut ALL ffSU ANypoy ILt. "President McKinlcy, in his message to the next Congress, December, 1B9H, made the recommendation. Congress,, the following March, 1(199, created an Isthmian canal commission." Then followed, Sullivan recalls, negotiations with Great Britnin concerning "some embarrassing British rights" under an old treaty, and the Hny-Paunccfoto treaty was substituted which gave the United States unrestricted right to build the canal. The trip of the Oregon was described by Admiral French E. Chadwick, historian of (he Spanish War, quoted by Sulli van, as "one unprecedented in battleship history, and onc which will long preserve its unique distinction." And Sec retary of the Navy John D. Long said, "It has no parallel in history." "The trip and the emotions it aroused." Mr. Sullivan con eluded, "had mote to do with American determination to have a ranama Canal than any other cause." So the best enshrinement is that American youth shall know that a great ship once bin p the name of Oregon, a ship as great as the Constitution or the linn Homme Richard, or any other under any flag that ever sailed the seas.
