With no man further than 10 feet from the next, they sys tematically covered the area where the 12 year-old lad disappeared July 5. Peter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred erick A. Gorman of Evanston, 111., vanished on a hiking trip with fel low scouts at a camp 12 miles north of Muskegon. A plane and ground search1 of the area immediately after Peter was reported missing failed to turn up any clue to his whereabouts. The boy s lather at first ex pressed belief his son had been kidnaped. He now has joined po lice in belief that Peter is dead. Prof. Burton C. Bastuschcck, 45, the Willamette teacher, is now working for his PhD at the Methodist lliff School of Theolo gy M Denver. Announcement of the selection of his hymn was received from W. W. Reid of the board of mis sions of the Methodist Church in New York. Prior to coming to Salem Bas tuscheck was a Methodist circuit pastor for several country churches. He came here from Kcosauqua, Iowa, a year ago. A pair of slick opera tors who apparently know the workings of the tills is believed responsible. Taken was $120 from The Spa, 382 Slate street, and $35 from Clark's restaurant, 479 Court street, police said. In each case one of the pair partially screened the cash register Irom employes' view while the other opened it to get the money. , Method of getting, the money without attracting - notice was opening an "emergency" door on the customer side of the cash reg ister behind which some of the register's mechanism can be reached, including a lever which will release the cash drawer with out ringing the bell. Apparently one man would use his newspaper to block the view of anyone from the back of the machine while his partner opened the door and flicked the lever, police said. Then the partner would reach around and lift the hills from the drawer and the two would leave. "The question is still open," he said. Two Cars and Train Involved in Crash Two out-of-state automobiles were involved in an accident with a Southern Pacific freight train at I2tn and Center about 1 oplock fcaiuraay afternoon. Record Cut of Forest Timber PORTLAND (jfi There was a record sale and record cut of na tional forest timber in the Pacific Northwest during the fiscal year ended June 30, J. Herbert Stone. regional U. S. forester, reported here Saturday. He said the harvest was 2,633.- 124,000 board feet, some 218 mil lion board feet more than in the previous 12-month period. Sales of this timber totaled 527, 278,657, an increase of $3,311,980. Top among the 18 national for ests of Oregon and Washington was the Willamette with a cut of 381 '4 million board feet worth $5,571,203 under 458 separate con tracts or sale agreements. The contract affects 20,000 work, ers in 32 plants of the American Can Co. and 15,000 workers in more than 30 plants of Continental Can, the union said. The agreement was announced by David J. MacDonald, president of the union. He said the union would strive to obtain a similar pay plan in its negotiations with the steel industry next year. Strike Leader Beaten by Chain SEBASTOPOL, Calif. Grami, who lives in Santa Rosa, told officers he was forced into a car by three men as he left his office at 4 a.m. Friday.
