Oregon Livestock StatusjRadford Sees Compared with Nation tHo Invasion By CLAUDE livestock on farms and ranches of the nation rose 3 per cent dur ing 1954 but they were worth 4 per cent less, mostly due to price drops in hogs and poultry, ac cording to the crop and livestock reports of the U.S.D.A. Cattle numbers are up one per cent to a record high of 95, 433,000 head; in Oregon numbers were up 2 per cent to 1,458,000, also a record. To arrive at a fair price, the de preciated values given by the Gen eral Appraisal company, 'Portland, last November were used, district 16 agreeing to pay one-halt of the total appraised depreciated value f 1552,271. District 16 also Is given the first option on purchase of such equip ment as U-l would not wish to move to the new site. It was felt that cost of the building plus the equipment which might be left with the building and desired by the elementary district would bring the price close to the $300, 000, mentioned in the lay citizens committee study. Provision also was made for the repurchase by U-l at any time in the future, in event U-l decided to operate a junior high school on the old site. AH transactions are to take place by the fall of 1956, and all provisions are contingent on the approval the voters at bond elec tions to be held in both districts. There are 55 million bogs in the U.S. Nearly all sections of the U.S. reported increased spring farrowing inten tions by farmers. Lack of moisture- or snow cover put spring grass prospects on Ore gon ranges below average at the end of January. The state as a whole was about normal since western Oregon grass was in bet ter than average condition for this time of the years. Califor nia, Washington, Arizona, and North Dakota were the only states with better than average range conditions. Nevada and Wyoming were worst with less than 80 per cent of 10-year aver age condition. By February 1 it is normal in Oregon for 70 per cent of the win ters snow to have fallen, this year the estimate is only 57 per cent. Six reservoirs Owyhee, Warm Springs, Unity, McKay, Fern Ridge and Emigrant Gap had less than half their average storage on February 1. Reports indicate that water aupplies may be short in the Burnt, Crooked, Imnaha, Malheur, Owyhee, Powder and Silvies river basin of central and eastern Oregon. Fewer animals in the nation are working harder to produce and reproduce. During 1954 more pigs were saved per litter, more milk produced per cow, more wool shorn per ewe and the calf crop was larger than ever before. Livestock is eating more grain and concentrates than average. On February 1 farmers were feeding 6Vt pounds of concen trates per cow and poultry grain feedings were also high. Meanwhile human consump tion of wheat and rye declined during last year and is expected to drop again this year. Per cap ita use of rice, oats and barley was at the same-rate as in 1953.
