Rev. and Mrs. Hugh Jull had as visitors last week Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Jull, of Melbeta, Neb. Richard Verbeck who was on the Boy Scout staff at Camp Pioneer during the past six weeks returned home last week end. Richard is working in the Stayton Cannery now. Mrs. Ruby Van Aiken, of California is spending several weeks with his sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Wood. Mrs. Van Aiken spent several days visiting other rela tives in Eugene while here. Oth er visitors at the Wood's home last week-end were his broth ers, Ralph Wood, of San Lean dro, Calif., and Devur Wood, from Dunsmuir, Calif. Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Stone are parents of a daughter, Shirley Jean, born Aug. 11 in the Salem Memorial Hospital. It is their second child and daughter. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Lester Mason and Marshall Stone of Mill City. Wins Note Suit Albany In district court Judge Wendell Tompkins grant ed Victor Carlson judgment against C. R .Gilbert for $480 plus interest from Jan. 25, and attorney's fees. The suit was based on a promissory note which, complaint recites was given the plaintiff last January. The Peninsula club on the Neck Road, held Its annual pot- luck picnic on the Willamette river at Mr. and Mrs. L. S. Lor enzens, on Sunday, Aug. 17. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Ewing and family left Sunday morn ing, Aug. 17, on a trip to Yuma Ariz., where they will visit her sister, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Me Call. They plan to be away for about three week and during that time may go farther east to visit other relatives. Dur ing their absence, her sister, Mrs. Ila Paris and children, will take care of the Ewing place. Nancy Harris, of Eugene, has been here visiting her grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Taylor, on Locks Road, for the past 10 days. Saturday she went to Milwaukee to visit Mr. and Mrs. John Sutherlln, for a few days. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Wood ward and her sister, and house guest, Mrs. Louise Harmon of Oakland, Calif., spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Wood ward at Dupee Valley. Mrs. Harmon will be here with the Woodwards for a few weeks. Mrs. Nora Goodwin of Den' ver, Colo., returned home Aug. 10 after spending two weeks here with her son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Goodwin. She made the trip both ways by plane. Cpl. Martin Goodwin left for Ft. Lewis, Wash., Aug. 10, where he will await reassign ment. He came home Sunday to be with his family. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Paul and daughter left last week to visit relatives in South Dakota. He will be away another week Paul is owner of the P and M garage. Paula Palmer and Betty Smith left last Tuesday, Aug. 12 for the Smith Creek Girls Scout camp, near Silver Creek Falls. There they have joined many other girls for two weeks of fun and training. Week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. John Zehner were Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Zehner and daughter Zendra, of Seattle. Wash. Other Sunday guests of the Zehners were Mr. and Mrs. Roland Board and son of Leban on and Mr. and Mrs. John Neit ling of Sweet Home. A multiple belt conveyor sy stem in use at a Newport News, Va., pier is equipped to load coal into four ships at a time. Amity Opening data for Amity schools has been an nounced for Sept IS, according to R. W. Haberly, Supt. of Amity high school and Albert Yoder, principal of the grade school. New asphalt tile has been laid in the halls at the high school. The grade school has added new adjustable desks and sound proof halls. There will be two new teach' era at the grade school, Miss Jo sephine Miller and Mrs. Helen Fonger. Miss Betty Saling, Lewis and Clark college, Portland; and Mrs. Gusta Hutchcroft, McMinn vllle, are new on the high school faculty. Mrs. H. E. Wid- mer was the leader. The Hopewell Missionary soc iety held its August meeting at toe Oscar Lafferty home Tues day evennig at 8:30 p.m. Miss Bertha Magness was the leader. The prayer meeting this week will be held at the HopeweU E.U.B. church. Last week it was held at the David Olke home, The basement floor of the Hopewell church is being painted this week by W. O. Moddemeyer. Members of the 4-H clubs from HopeweU who exhibited at the Yamhill County Fair were Gary Polvi, Dean Brown,, Robert Pearse and Harold Widrner; Shirley Ellenberger, Gayle Lar son, Joyce Hewitt, Sharon Mc Kenney. Mrs. N. O. Pearse furn ished transportation. Mrs. H. E. Wldmer celebrated her birthday last week, and her family surprised her with a party that evening. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Beaty and Mr. and Mrs. Will Smith of Mc Minnville were dinner guests of the Henry Knoche family in Prineville. Mrs. Smith taught the HopeweU school several years ago. Martin Beusekamp and Charles Warner are building a machine shed on the Walter Kirkwood farm, using material from the old barn recently torn down. Jess Gilkey is building a dou ble garage at his home. I Mr. and Mrs. True Wilson of Sand Point, Idaho, were guests of Charles and Ed Wilson the past week, the first time in 23 years the brothers have been together. Mr. and Mrs. Keith Legg spent the week-end with his sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Smith of Corvallis. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Legg of Sioux Falls, S. D., are guests of his brother and family, the Clar ence Legg family of Hopewell. Billy Thompson of Bakersfield, Calif., surprised Mr. and Mrs. Ed Loop Thursday afternoon on his way to Seattle to visit his sis ter, Ernestine. They called on Mr. and Mrs. Guy Freahour and family that evening. He and his family lived j on the farm now occupied by the Nell Currie family. His brother, Clyde Thompson, is managing a hotel in Bakersfield and Mrs. Thompson and little daughter will join him in Seattle, coming by air. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Loop received a card from Helsinki, Finland, sent by Henning Hovmand of Copenhagen, Denmark, who was an exchange farm student in Oregon last year. He worked at milk testing while here. He at tended the Olympic games in Finland. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Loop and daughters, LaVerne and Jessie, and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Loop and son, Dale, of Toledo, were Sunday afternoon guests of the Ed Loops. LaVerne won the 4-H championship for Guernseys at the Lincoln County Fair at New port and plans to bring her cat tle to the State Fair. Monday dinner guests at the N. C. Pearse home were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dove and daughter, Lauralalne, of Fort Worth, Tex., William Pearse, William Craw ford and Art Nygren. Mrs. Art Reed is at her parents' home in Manning, Ore., caring for their stock while Miss Del pha Evey and Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Evey are gone to California. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hersha and family went to Redmond last week-end and brought home a frozen food locker that was stored at their former home in Redmond. Mr. Hersha enjoyed trout fishing on the way. Mode home this week. Mr. and Mrs. Emery Dentel and family attended a Dentel family reunion at Champoeg aunday. Mrs. M. Eckl of Portland Is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Lio nel Graham. Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Denton and Patty, of Tacoma, Wash., returned home after visiting the Bill Denton home here for a week. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Dunham of Hoquiam, Wash., visited with Mrs. Augusta Jensen this week. Mr. and Mrs. Spike Anderson and family have moved into the apartment vacated by Mr. and Mrs. BUI Ellingworth and fam ily, who have moved to Eugene. Mrs. Wilbur Helmen of Val- setz spent several days with her sister, Mrs. Delbert NewkirU. and family. Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Boundv drove to Grants Pass over the week-end. Saturday they ac companied Mr. and Mrs. Gordon MendenhaU of Grants Pass on a trip to Crater Lake. Joe Aase was honored on his birthday Sunday with a dinner. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Jack Shetterly and family of Riddle and Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Fox and Mark. Ballston Roberts Roberts At the Grange meet ing Saturday night, Louis D. Johnston made a report on the foot and mouth disease among hogs and that they were placed under quarantine for a month in Marion county; also that there is a disease that has developed among turkeys which is also car ried to chickens by crows. Several cases of blackleg among cattle were reported. Frank Judd reported on the Unit School BiU and it was vot ed to invite speakers out to ex plain the bills that will be on the November ballot. A com mittee was appointed to work with the lecturer in obtaining speakers. The Home Economics club met at the home of Mrs. G. S. Hig gins, at which time is was an nounced that the Booster night program wui be sept. 12 at 8 p.m. Plans were made for light refreshments. The community is invited. On the lecturer's program an article was read on water sup ply and health problems by Mrs. S. L. Minard; a reading, "Willie the Rat," was given by Frank Judd. Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Spencer received the third and fourth degree obligation during the business session. Ballston Mrs. R. H. Brooks suffered a painful accident when she fell from the top of a ladder while picking apples. She received a broken arm and other injuries. Mr. and Mrs. J. Perrazi and daughter of Oakland, Calif have arrived for a visit at the home of Mrs. Perrazl's father, James Sears. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Daws and daughter, of Los Angeles, Calif., are spending a vacation at the home of Mrs. Dawes' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jay Sechrlst.
