Timberline, Inc., Buys Maple Burl District Forester Rodney O. Fety of the bureau of land man agement announced today the results of a competitive sealed bid maple burl sale. Timber line, Inc., of Portland, was the successful bidder for an esti mated 100 tons of maple burus at a record price of $42.60 per ton. This material was appraised at $20 per ton. Harvesting of this product from O&C timber lands will take place in a trib utary of the South Santiam river east of Lebanon in Linn county. The maple burls are export ed to Marshall plan countries where old world hand crafts men make fine veneers and specialty products of intricate designs. This provides employ ment in those countries and gives them manufactured prod ucts to enter into world trade First Use of Monkey Lung as Substitute for Human Lungs By FRANK CARET (Auocislsd Preu Science Writer) White Sulphur Springs, W. Va. (P) First use of a monkey lung to provide an external sub stitute for the lungs of a human being during surgery was an nounced last week by a surgeon who said the technique kept sev eral babies alive for a time one of them for three hours. The monkey lungs, freshly re moved from the animals, were used in conjunction with a "me chanical heart" and were em ployed specifically to supply ox ygen to the blood of the patients whose own heart and lung sys tem were cut off. One monkey lung was used for each of five human infants. All the babies were suffering from congenital heart defects, and-gain more economic secur ity. It further provides local employment in Oregon and in creases the degree of utilization of forest products from bureau timberlands. Timberline, Inc., and Alfred A. Loeb, Inc., the principal ex porters of burls have devel oped special harvesting tech niques to get the burls from the woods as rapidly as possible. The burls are then exported in a special water bath, so as to prevent them from checking or splitting before final curing. A new and profitable business has developed by the utilization of forest species and material that heretofore has ( gone to waste or been destroyed in the normal cause of timber harvest. Corns guff I feLH and direct operation on the heart itself constituted their only chance for survival. None of the babies survived, but the surgeon who described the technique was developed by Dr. W. T. Mustard of the univer sity staff. ... Dr. Janes said the Canadian monkey lung technique consti tuted another possible step to ward the objective of perfecting substitute heart and lung sys tems for use in cases where tem porary stoppage of the patient's own heart and lungs offers the only chance for successful surgery. He stressed that the Canadian work and that of other investi gators in this "substitute" sys tem field is still in the expert mental stage. Several investigators have kept animals alive for long per iods with such systems, and there have been three eases where humans have been kept alive for short periods with the aid of purely mechanical systems. But the Canadian work is me first in which the lung of an animal has been used as an ex perimental substitute for the lungs of a human. It works this way: Blood is pumped out of the patient's veins by means of a mechanical heart. The blood then is fed through the monkey lung, which is caused to inflate and deflate automatically. The lung takes in oxygen, which is then supplied to the blood. It also removes carbon dioxide from the blood. The blood ultimately is returned to the patient'a body by means of a tube linked with an artery.
