The drug still is in the experi mental stage, but preliminary trial indicate that it may have real value as an appetite killer for those iat men and women who! try to stay on a 1,000 ealorie diet about 1,000 cal orie! below a normal count. h First clinical trials with the new drug have been reported by twor New York physicians Dr. X. Philip Gelvin and Thomas McGavick. The patients treated ,wr at the city's Welfare Island Dispensary unit I The drug has a technical name at some 20 syllables, but its developers, scientists of Smith, Kline & French, Philadelphia, eH it Aptrol for short. : . Qrs. Gelvin and McGavlck have reported that the patients first administered the appetite killing drug were attending the obesity clinic at Welfare Island, Overweight persons with dia betes or those with heart con ditfons were not used in the trials. All told, 65 patients two PAUL ELLIS males and 63 females partici pated in the study. 9 9 To check the efficacy of the new compound, part of the study group was put on placebo medi cation "sugar pills" that re sembled the real drug. Significantly, the new com pound caused few bad side re actions, a problem encountered heretofore with other appetite killing drugs. Those drugs usually reduce the appetite, but in most cases they caused sick ness and discomfort to the patient. Death Toll in Plane Crash 33 Elisabeth, N. J. W The death toll in the Feb. 11 crash of a National Airlines plane here stands at 33. Harold Brown, 26, of The Bronx, N. Y a passenger on the doomed DC-6 that smashed into an apartment house, died Wed nesday night at Elizabeth Gen eral Hospital, Besides Brown, 28 of the Miami-bound plane's 63 passengers and crew members perished in the tragedy the third in Eliza beth within a two-month period. Four of the dead were resi dents of the apartment house. The three plane disasters, all within a three-mile area of New ark Airport, thus have taken a total of 119 lives. Brannan to Make First Political Talk Washington U.R Secretary of Agriculture Charles F. Brannan, one of Truman's best campaign ers in 1948, is scheduled to make his first political speech of the current election year in TopeRa, Kan., next week.
