anoa! has a new drug that will

fc. The drug still is in the experi
mental stage, but preliminary
trial indicate that it may have
real value as an appetite killer
for those iat men and women
who! try to stay on a 1,000
ealorie diet about 1,000 cal
orie! below a normal count.
h First clinical trials with the
new drug have been reported by
twor New York physicians Dr.
X. Philip Gelvin and Thomas
McGavick. The patients treated
,wr at the city's Welfare Island
Dispensary unit
I The drug has a technical name
at some 20 syllables, but its
developers, scientists of Smith,
Kline & French, Philadelphia,
eH it Aptrol for short.
: . Qrs. Gelvin and McGavlck
have reported that the patients
first administered the appetite
killing drug were attending the
obesity clinic at Welfare Island,
Overweight persons with dia
betes or those with heart con
ditfons were not used in the
trials.
All told, 65 patients two

males and 63 females partici
pated in the study.

To check the efficacy of the
new compound, part of the study
group was put on placebo medi
cation "sugar pills" that re
sembled the real drug.
Significantly, the new com
pound caused few bad side re
actions, a problem encountered
heretofore with other appetite
killing drugs. Those drugs
usually reduce the appetite, but
in most cases they caused sick
ness and discomfort to the patient.
