Jane Defies Paris Style Shell Leave Skirts Short By BOB THOMAS Hollywood, Aug. 21 W) Servicemen of America, you have a friend. Her name is Jane Russell. Some friend, huh? It seems that the sentiment of most red-blooded American men, particularly those to whom the availability of feminine charms is limited, is dead set against lowering me iemaie nem line. Lt. Tom Hamrick, late of Charleston, S. C, but now re siding near the 38th parallel, so informed AP Columnist Hal Boyle. The lieutenant assailed the dic tate of French designer Christian Dior, who has sent the skirts of his new dresses lower than the value of a U. S. Nickel. ' When I informed the ample Miss Russell of the Dior dive, she replied: . . . "Horrors!" She thought the thing over again and commented: "Horrors!" When she recovered from the shock, I asked her if she would follow the Dior decision. "Absolutely not!" she replied. "Down again, up again! Down again! I'm through altering my dresses. They're going to stay Just the way they are now. I'm !ng). Iff going to look as though I'm all legs, because my legs usually look as though they ex tend up to my neck, anyway. I hinted that something should be done about this latest French sabotage of Americarfhnale pleas ures. I asked Miss Russell if U. S. women shouldn't revolt against the dictation of Paris. 'Haven t they already?" she replied archly. Rah, rah, Russell! Fooh, pooh Paree! not going to change them for anybody." (Do I hear cheeps from Korea? ) The buxom brunette admitted that she succumbed to the "new look" a few years back, as did all women (the sheep). "We had to," she argued. "A woman would look like a freak in those days if she didn't have a long skirt. "But I'm not going to change now. I think the skirt is m just the right place that is, exactly in the middle of the calf. To wear a skirt at your ankles is stupid and to wear it at your knees looks ridiculous. (Does it now, men?) The mid-calf position gives the most graceful line pos sible to the legs." , While rehearsing a dance num ber, she described her costume: "It's cut 'way up here (point- San Marino Blockade Lifted San Marino, Aug. 21 P) Italy lifted her two-year-old blockade of this 28 square mile communist republic today.
