Bush Home to Come Down Familiar land mark, home of Salem banker for over 50 years, at Chemeketa and North Capitol, which will be removed to make way for state office building. Residence was once one of finest in Salem, GIVES WAY TO STATE Bush Home Will Make Way for Office Building By BEN MAXWELL " Before construction starts on the $2,000,000 state office building to be erected on the block square area now being readied north of the Slate House one more residence must be removed. That familiar landmark has for more than 50 years been the home of Salem's banker, A. N. Bush. Mr. Bush, who was married about 1885, occupied residences on South Cottage street until the early 1890's. During those 'hard times the residence at 978 Chemeketa or 250 Capitol street came into Bush ownership. Stu art Bush, a grandson, recalls hearing his grandfather tell of a tenant who occupied what is now the blue room. This ten ant resisted eviction when re modeling started and it took considerable persuasion to in duce him to vacate. When finally remodelled and occupied by A. N. Bush this dwelling was one of the more sumptuous in Salem. On the ground floor were four 'rooms for the maid's quarters and the dining room. Here, too, were the east and west libraries, a music room and the sun porch. Kitchens, maid's dining room and laundry were in the base ment. Upstairs was a room known in the family as the chimney room. Later architects might have called it the master's bed room. Nearby was the lady's boudoir consisting of a suite of three rooms. On an adjacent sun porch was an aviary filled with canary birds. Two guest rooms, designated the blue and yellow rooms, were also located on this floor a s well as four baths. In the at tic was Mr. Bush's woodwork ing shop where he spent many a pleasant' and amusing hour at the bench. An elevator in the A. N. Bush home is now being transferred to the Sally Bush place where Mr. Bush will make his residence. Remington Rand on Name Honor Roll Mark H. The article, which contains a map and nine pictures showing how the work was done, was written by Ray Webber, Salem, assistant construction engineer for the Oregon highway com mission. The project, which saves 1.8 miles, eliminates many danger ous curves and provides a wid er road, was completed last October. Webber's article tells tech nical details of the paving pro ject, which cost $772,724. It also tells how mechanical methods were used because of the shortage of skilled paving finishers. "For years there has been a marked decrease in skilled pav ing finishers in Oregon, the re sult of which has been a gradu al changing of specifications to include mechanical methods in order to maintain the quality or improve the standard of the completed pavement. The ma chinery now used is simple to operate and operators can be broken in on the job," the article says. Webber said only two skilled hand-finishers were used, with new machinery doing the rest. This machinery, he wrote, will relieve contractors of the fear of being unable to hire skilled finishers. The article also told of prob lems of getting raw materials to the site by railroad, Bible College Choir Gives Sacred Concert Woodburn The a cappella choir of the Pacific Bible col lege of Portland will give a concert of sacred music in the Church of God tonight at 8 o'clock.
