Holmstrom, whose exploits in navigating treacherous rapids brought him nationwide recog nition, was described as des pondent over failure of an 18 by six-foot boat, built at The Dalles, to negotiate the Grande Ronde river, where he was pilot for a U. S. coast and geodetic survey party, according to Dave McCarthy, surveyor. ' The Portland office of the Coast and Geodetic survey re ceived a telegram from the of ficer in charge of the party, saying "River Pilot Holmstrom died from a self-inflicted gun shot wound." Holmstrom, one of the few men ever to navigate Oregon's perilous Snake river to Hell's Canyon, borrowed a .22 caliber rifle Saturday night from the camp cook, McCarthy related, announcing he was "going to shoot a chicken." The body was found beside a large rock, with a bullet wound above the right ear, McCarthy said. Hol.nstrom, whom "Napoleon Bonaparte," No. 1 man of Kiri winia island in the South Pa cific, adopted as "No. 1 White Man Son" while serving in the navy, leaves his mother, Mrs. Frances Holmstrom, of Coquil1r Ore., where the body has be shipped.
