-driver survey expedition in east
ern Oregon Saturday night.
Holmstrom, whose exploits in
navigating treacherous rapids
brought him nationwide recog
nition, was described as des
pondent over failure of an 18
by six-foot boat, built at The
Dalles, to negotiate the Grande
Ronde river, where he was pilot
for a U. S. coast and geodetic
survey party, according to Dave
McCarthy, surveyor. '
The Portland office of the
Coast and Geodetic survey re
ceived a telegram from the of
ficer in charge of the party,
saying "River Pilot Holmstrom
died from a self-inflicted gun
shot wound."
Holmstrom, one of the few
men ever to navigate Oregon's
perilous Snake river to Hell's
Canyon, borrowed a .22 caliber
rifle Saturday night from the
camp cook, McCarthy related,
announcing he was "going to
shoot a chicken."
The body was found beside a
large rock, with a bullet wound
above the right ear, McCarthy
said.
Hol.nstrom, whom "Napoleon
Bonaparte," No. 1 man of Kiri
winia island in the South Pa
cific, adopted as "No. 1 White
Man Son" while serving in the
navy, leaves his mother, Mrs.
Frances Holmstrom, of Coquil1r
Ore., where the body has be
shipped. FINES, FRICASSEE

said an estimated 150 other
persons escaped the police drag

Western Pine House
Mouldings Going up
Ceiling prices for western
pine house mouldings were to
day Increased 20 percent at the
mill level by the OPA. Simul
taneously the maximum prices
for industrial mouldings were
advanced 6 percent.
The increases, effective May
21, 1046, are the first since
mouldings were brought under
price control at March, 1942,
levels. Resellers are permitted
to pass on the actual dollar-and-cent
amounts of the increase at
mill level. At the retail level
since ft percentage increase is not
permitted, the advance repre
sents a boost in ceilings by ap
proximately 10 to 13 percent.
Western pine mouldings are
among the critical items listed
by the civilian production ad
ministration as required for the
veterans housing program.
