Her keen old eyes stu died Kay. "Just lookin' at noth in'. Why don't you go out some where? Why don't you ask Miss Babs to come up here?" "She's gone away for a visit," Kay answered. "I was about to come down. What time is it?" Liza folded her arms across her amble bosom and glared down at the unhappy gitl. "Time for you to cut out this foolish ness and tell Mr. Jimmy you ain't aimin' to marry him," she said fiercely. I hope you don t start tha! again, Kay answered petulant ly. Liza began to plead. "Please don't mary him, Miss Kay, ho ney. I don't know why I don t like him, but I don't. I reckon it's his eyes. They knows too much. They don't believe in the things you believe in." "That's enough, Liza. I am go ng to marry Mr. Jimmy. You may as well get used to the idea." The first month of the new year was over today. Kay awoke with a premonition of something more pleasant than usual going to happen. She searched around mentally and found it. This was the night of the President s Birthday ball in Atlanta. She'd be with Rex for a few hours. There was the familiar knock on the door that Kay had heard all her life. Somehow, it sound ed different this morning. Liza's face wore a broad grin that Kay hadn't seen for ages. "The doc tor callin' you, Miss Kay, honey. Get up quick." "Doctor?" Kay asked. "Dr. Sims?" "No'm," Liza urged. "Dr. War ren! Hurry up. Go on and sec what he want." Kay sprang out of bed. Over the telephone Rex asked if she would drive to Warm Springs with him that afternoon. He was, he said, bringing Tommy Martin home. "Oh," she asked eagerly, "Is he well enough?" She was sur prised the way her heart pound ed at the sound of his voice. "He'll be on crutches for a few weeks," Rex told her, "then he".l gradually learn to walk alone." "Oh, I'd love to go." An afternoon with Rex and on to the ball tonight. If this could only go on and on . . . Francis was at home for his lunch hour when Rex arrived a little past noon. They were talk ing in the living room when Kay came downstairs. Lucia was there, too, looking up at the doc tor with a faintly insolent smile on her lips. Francis was saying to Dr. Warner, "I'm giad Tommy has improved so wonderfully. He s been the pet of the entire vil lage ever since his illness. Your work deserves all the credit." "Hello," Kay said, smiling up at him. Trying not to remember the last time they were in this room together, his arms about her. "How are you, Kay?" he asked. Then he added, "Your fa ther says he thinks I deserve all the credit for Tommy's recov ery." "Well, don't you?" Lucia asked. Dr. Warner glanced at Lucia for a moment and Kay saw that he disliked her stepmother in tensely. "Sometime I'll tell you why Dr. Sims' work kept Tom my from becoming a hopeless cripple," he promised. Lucia never allowed a conver sation to get far away from her She turned to the younger man "But, Dr. Warner." she asked amusedly, "why did you come down here to live? Your name. your achievements could be used in great hospitals, in great ci ties" Kay looked at her fathers wife. "Perhaps," she suggested, "if Tommy walks it will be recognition enough for Dr. War ren." "That's right!" Rex agreed, "it doesn't matter where the crip pled limbs are. docs it? Just so the owner learns to use them again." Lucia rose languidly. "Well, I guess we'll all meet at the dance tonight?" You know it was my home for three weeks." Then she was with Rex in his car again, and they both had a feeling of reprieve, and a sense of everything being right if only for a few hours. He motioned to a package back of the seat. "I'm taking Tommy a rifle. A toy, of course. It was the only thing he wished for when I asked him what he wanted most to do when he walks." Kay laughed. "A modern Leo nidas. The sword is gone, re placed by the rifle. All he needs now is a local Pass of Thermop- yjae." Rex stopped the car in front of the Medical Building. I'll try to be back with Tommy very soon," lie promised. Lost in thought, Kay was startled to hear a child's happy voice call, "Miss Kay, watch how fast I can walk with these things!" It was Tommy. "Oh, darling, I'm watching!" she cried, and caught him close in her arms. To be continued 2618 SIZES It.
