"Are you one of the new sien ographers?" "Yes." "I'm Evelyn James," announc ed the thin girl. "And this," in dicating the girl who'd spoken first, "is Gladys Smith. And this" the quiet third member "is Hajel Traub. I imagine you'll be turned over to me. Carol usually has me show the new girls around." "Carol?" "Miss Hansen. She calls her self Carla, but I knew her when. She's sort of head girl around here; lakes Mr. Sheridan's work." "Hopes to take him when she ean catch him In a weak mo ment," grumbled Gladys Smith. "Now, Glad " "Oh, listen, Ev, we might as well give this girl the lowdown. Let's try to keep her by fore warning her, because she's go ' lng to need it. She has that cer tain something Carol won't be able to take, and Mr. Sheridan's having trouble enough without this office turnover." Evelyn James held out her hands in despair. "You'd think we were trying lo get rid of you before you started, wouldn't you, but we're not. Carla is difficult. She thinks being office manager means bawling t lie girls out in public. Not many of them will take it these days, with jobs that Rce'lar Fellers prove out. We've no time for mistakes. Evelyn, take Miss Green " "Miss Grey " Again the sultry glance, this time accompanied by a queer crooked smile. "I'm sorry. I must have been thinking of val ue rather than name." For a moment the three girls waited, watching Jane and Car la; then, as Jane turned quickly to keep a swift smile from breaking, they relaxed. The new girl could take It. That night, over a chop and salad, Jane reviewed the notes she'd made on that day's Investi gation. Mark Sheridan wu i lamb. Which didn't mean he wasn't unruly. Lambs might be white and woolly and innocent or was guileless the word? but they were quite capable of butt-( ing their stubborn heads Into the best piled apple cart. And they couldn't be led, No, while Mark Sheridan might arouse a mater nal protective feeling in every woman's breast, it didn't mean that he was capable of handling his invention to the best of even his own Interests. Carla Hansen was not a lamb, she was a she-wolf In Hedy La Marr clothing. Carla would be out, In case of a reorganization; or if she was able to play her wolf game on those succeeding Sheridan, Jane would see she was assisted out. Evelyn James was doing the work that upheld Carla's repu tation. Evelyn should have her position. So much for personalities. According to the girls there were enough orders coming in lo warrant an expansion of the plant, but the board refused to release the necessary capital. The board was "trimming sails." The girls had called Gram's representative, her proxy, Lisle Carter, a "wet smack." It was to his interest to protect Gram's investment or couid he? If so "I must have a telephone," said Jane aloud. A moment later she added, "I'd better wire lor my portable. I'd like to keep Gram in touch with each phase of this, and I can't do it longhand." She wrote her telegrams, then went out through the early spring twilight to file them. The City Hall lay beyond a triangu lar park filled with flowers. She eyed that a moment, then mov ed directly toward it. In (he foyer she paused a mo ment, found names listed on the board, then went down a long marble corridor, up a few steps, and confronted a man in plain clothes, just leaving his office. "May I help you?" he asked. An hour later Jane was back in her apartment, and across from her in the cheerless living room sat a private detective vouched for by the chief of po lice. (To be continued) Around 1,000 nationals of the other Americas have received technical and advanced training in the United States. pay better just begging someone to take them." "Why do you stay?" asked Jane, delighted at this quick in sight Into the affairs of the Sher idan company. "We couldn't let Mr. Sheridan down," Gladys answered. "He has enough to buck. More busi ness than he can handle, be cause his stockholders won't let him expand enough to handle the new business." "I should think stockholders would want to expand to " "Not Ihis bunch of stuffed owls," muttered the plump Gladys. "One old dame with more money than brains controls most of the votes, and the wet smack she sends in lo represent her is a mossback. Spends his time here pussyfooting through the office seeing that none of us wastes a sheet of paper." "And Haskins," put in the quiet Hazel, "All he can say is, 'We must trim our sails and ride this war storm our." "Why, say " "Sh," whispered G 1 a d y s. "Here comes somebody." Jane turned from putting her topcoat on a hanger to see a dark-haired girl wilh smoky blue eyes enter, cast a sultry glance around and say, "Girls, this won't do. What would Mr. Sheridan think?" Evelyn came forward then to introduce Jane. Miss Hansen favored her wilh a quick glance which seemed to concentrate more on her smartly cut rayon tweed she wore than on her.
