Finally, he said slowly. "We'll have to talk to this Morse fellow. Maybe we can persuade him to wail awhile before going after that Roselta stone." "You mean offer him a share? I'd thought of that, loo, Dad, but I'm not certain that he'd listen. He well, you know how arch eologisls are. They're just as crazy In their way as we are in ours." "We could offer In share our supplies with him," Fleming went on. "And if all that fails we've still got you." Tyra's head enme up. "I don't understand. Dad." A twinkle found its way to Mr. Fleming's deep-set eyes. "Sandy Morse is in love with you. isn't he?" Tyra said slowly, "I don't see what that has In do with it." ''I think between us. we can persutide him to stay, all right. We'll so over to their camp right nfler we hnve something to eat " Tyra gazed thoughtfully into the fire. All these weeks she had loathed being suspicious of Sandy. Each day of compan ionship on the trait had been harder than the last, with the knowledge in her heart that she was not trusting the zealous young archeologisl. Only today she had been released from her torment, only to be plunged, U seemed, into something more disagreeable. Use SHiidy's liking for her as a club to bend his judgment? She shuddered. No. she was done with deceit. She had fin ished with it today. Proposition Sandy, Gil and Helen were seated around their fire, dis cussing way and means of ap proaching the Chamber of the Serpent CJod when Tyra and her father stepped out of the IKOIN ESS EIELI 1 ia shadows. After some formalities of greeting the Flemings made themselves comfortable in the circle, and Mr. Fleming com mented upon the events of the day as reported to him by Tyla. He went on. "I don't mind telling you, now, that I was suspicious of you people. That's why I sent Tyra with you to day." Across the fire Sandy met Tyra's eyes. "Then you went with us today to spy on us," he said slowly, like a statement. She answered in an oddly muffled voice, "We had lo know." So far as Sandy was concern ed, they might have been alone. "I think I see, now, why you didn't want to guide us here." "I had a good reason . . . Dad will tell you about it." Mr. Fleming look up the con versation. "Yes, I'll tell you, Morse. We're not botanists. That is a blind to put people off the scent. I am a mining engineer." Helen gasped and Sandy re marked dryly, "I'm not sur prised to hear you're not bo tanists. " Mr. Fleming continued, "For twenty years, since Tyra was a baby, I've drifted around Mexico from one property to another. Chihuahua. Durango, Sonora. I've managed mines and pros pected all through those states. Then, two-three years ago I helped open a property in the Banbana River District of Ni caragua. That wqs where I first heard of the Forbidden Land and what I heard made me cur ious to find out more. So I went lo Guatamala, from the Gulf side, and was fortunate enough to talk to a party who had pene trated this country for quite n distance. Their descriptions of the geologic formations made me certain there was gold in here." Sandy passed over that with out comment. "Then I take it that you found a mine." Mr. Fleming let his eyes rest momentarily upon each face as if to assure himself how his news would be received. "I hadn't been prospecting around this plateau a week until I ran onto a free gold pocket that's a bonanza. Frankly, I've never seen anything equal to il, in all my experience. Nuggets well, you have lo see them to believe it." Sandy said carefully, "I no ticed some of Hunac-Ceel's peo ple wearing nuggets today." Mr. Fleming cleared his throat and continued, "I've al ready panned out a nice little ACROSS Otitrr cover- Iiik of a Hie Instigate Division of a play Extended journey PI neon Old card same Pay one's thai'6 Wilting fluid Word ot con sent Verv hlack KhRllsh ill vine-l-'refiuently Rack of a bout Palm cockatoo Aquatic birds Kcmttittm mime PertalnltiR 10 tho throat Leave Rons MiiFical com position Exist Symbol for nickel Brought Into exact posi tion Ca ri y Percussion 1n itru mcius Mechanical har American explorer Partial dark ness Formerly Forced air upon Free Hard water Tia same More!i:inU. Probably I'd have had the whole pocket cleaned up if I'd been able to work witl'i my three Yaquis the whole time, but when I had to send two of them with Tyra for supplies, my forces was cut so I haven't been able to accomplish much I was able to carry in noth ing except gold pans, you see. However, we're working full strength again and we should clean up the pocket in three or four months. But here's the rub, Morse." Fleming leaned closer. "From what Tyra tells me you plan to make your raid on that altar In spite of the warnings of the In dians. You must realize that if you do this we'll all have to leave the plateau right away." Sandy gave a start. "I sup pose that is true." "You've been thinking about it, I see." "Well, yes. Of course, I didn't know about your gold mine." Sandy glanced at Tyra to find her gazing steadily at him, her eyes like new moons with the firelight slanting up into her face. Fleming shifted. "We don't want to be run off this plateau until we've cleaned up this poc ket. So I've got a proposition to make to you, Morse. We know the Indians of that village have us under their eye all the time and we're fairly certain that as long as we keep away from that altar they'll let us alone. "My suggestion is this: You men join Tyra and me on clean ing up this rich pocket of gold, We'll make you a fair offer let you have all the gold you can pan out. Then when the pocket is gutted we'll all pack up and leave the plateau to gether. Just before we go you can make your raid on the altar and get your Rosctta-stone. In that way, we'd both have what we came up here for, only you'd have a poke of gold in addi tion. How does it sound to you?" Agreed It sounded like more delay, more frustration. "With Gil and me working, how long do you think it will take to clean up the pocket?" Sandy asked, choosing his words with care. "Hard lo tell exactly. Maybe two months. And of course we'll divide our supplies with you I forgot to mention that. My Yaquis can do all the hunting, which will save time, and we concentrate our camps in order to have on cooking unit."
