"He doesn't ap peal to me sentimentally." "Oh, well, you may change. Even If you don't, one has to make sacrifices for one's art." "I wish that you'd keep on be ing silent," said Kathleen. "Hey, wait a minute!" Joe call ed, as she started off. "What did you do with that bottle?" "It's there by the tree," Kath leen answered. . "Okay!" said Joe. "I made a deposit on it." "Well, of all things? Worrying about a silly little deposit of a few pennies." "My darling," said Joe, "pen ies count nowadays." He watched Kathleen go on her way, shaking his head there in the shadow of the big old tree. Such a sweet little thing lo look at, and such an exasper ating little thing to listen to. Then he put thoughts of Kath leen from his mind, and arose to greet Ruby. "You were swell," he said, and meant it. "You got right under the skin of Letty, and made her live." "Thank you, Joe," said Ruby, She sat down beside him. "You sound as though you really mean what you say.", ,"''" ; ' "I do," said Joe, "I hope if I ever get a play produced, the act ress will make my heroine live as you made Letty live. I liked you a lot, Ruby really I did." "Joe, you're sweet." Ruby Innl Kafir atfainci th trunk of the tree. "And this is a hea venly spot. I'm falling In love with it." "The barn, you mean?" asked Joe. "Yes. And the country all around it." Joe instinctively . placed his arm about her, drew her to him. Ruby did not resist. She relaxed against him like a little girl who was all tired out from too much running about. They sat thus, silent understanding. And Joe knew that he would always remember the moment. It was a sweet moment to remember Ruby, with her appealing per fume, the dark, star-sprinkled sky, the sound of sleepy insects. "Something for me to remem ber in my old age," he thought. Presently Ruby stirred. "It's dear of you, Joe," she said, "lo let me rest here like this. I know you must be want ing to get back into the gaiety." "You're wrong," Joe said. "I like this much better. The two of us here together sort of of understanding, not needing to talk a lot of chatter." "It is nice," said Ruby. "I like it also." And they relaxed again, gaz ing off toward the barn. But they did not know, of course that Kathleen and Paul were also relaxing sitting upon a bench, their backs against the barn's wall. "And do you suppose," Kath leen was saying, "that Ruby really will do something about Joe's play, If she likes it?" "I wouldn't be surprised," said Paul. "She does seem to want to try starring herself. But getting a producer interested, and finding backing means a lot." "Yes, I suppose so." Kdthlcen was thoughtful for a moment. "Has the author of 'Goodbye, Honey Chile!" gotten his back ing.'" "I'm not sure about that Paul replied. "But I hear some scouts are being sent down from acw York to watch the pro iluclion here in Llnvllle." "Then If I had a small part Hie scouts would see me!' "Unless they're stone blind," said Paul. He took one of aKlh Icon's hands, and laid it against his cherl- a gesture he was us ing that week in the iirst act. Bu Gene Ahem E. Wright! of the play. "You are mighty easy to look at.1 "And you are going to give me a chance, aren't you?" said Kathleen. She leaned forward so that she could watch Paul's face. "It means so much to me." "I know it does," said Paul. "I'll bringthe script of the play out to the barbecue. You can read it, and tell me what you think." "But I know I'll love the play," said Kathleen. "May I read aloud to you the cole you have in mind for me?" "Of course you may," said Paul. He pressed the hand he held to his lips a gesture he used in the second act of the play. "You go with moonlight and roses," he said, his voice husky with emotion. "You spell romance Kathleen, my sweet one." "Thank you," Kathleen said. "I love having you say things like that to me, Paul." . She had forgotten completely that only a short time before, when with Joe Neely, she had used' the expression "sentiment al nonsense." Sarcasm It was 1 o'clock in the morn ing when Joe walked over to the barn "Sorry to interrupt such a charming scene," he. said, ".but I'm a working man. I have to get home for some, sleep." He smiled at Kathleen,, who edged away from Paul. "Mind going now? "Certainly not," Kathleen said. "I've been wondering what was keeping you "And I," said Joe, "thought you were coming back to the old tree. Ruby and I were discussing my play.' Kathleen got up, held out her hand to Paul. "Goodnight, Paul," she said. "Thanks sc much for the helpful talk. I'm going to be pretty busy for the next few days, getting the old farmhouse in shape for the par ty but drop by whenever you feel like it." "Thanks," said Paul. "I'll do that. Good-night, and good luck." He turned to Joe. "Same to you, Neely. When does Ruby expect to produce your play?" "We haven't gotten that far," said Joe. "Coming, Kathleen?" Kathleen walked away with him. "You needn't have .bitten the man's head off," she said, when they were getting into the car. ' "What man?" said Joe ras if he didn't know. "Paul, of course. He was only Interested in the play. That's all." "Maybe. But I didn't like the sarcasm I delected in his voice." "That was your imagination," said Kathleen. "My imagination is never sar castic," Joe retorted. They rodo back lo town in si lence. But Kathleen's silence was a pleasant one that is, to herself. In spite of the strained relations that had sprung up be tween her and Joe, her heart was singing. Matters were cer tainly looking up for her and she wasn't going ,to worry her head about Joe and their dis agreements. Cosy Picture "You and Paul made a cozy picture sitting with your backs to the old barn," Joe said, as he brought the car to a standstill in front of the Vaughan resi dence. "Terribly cozy and ro mantic." - "Really?" said Kathleen, "You saw us that way because you'd Just made a cozy and ro mantic picture with Ruby sit ting beneath the old oak tree.' "Maybe." Joe got out, held the car "door open for Kathleen. "How about a dale one night this week? Bctte Davie is going to be on at The Galax theater." "Sorry, Joe", said Kathleen I'm not making any dates. I've jot 10 much to do digging up stuff to carry out to the farm for the party. The place has, to be almost completely done over I mean cleaned from cellar to attic." "Working nights?" "Partly, yes. But I'm going to do a lot of reading too.-1 want to study some' parts so's to be able to show Paul and Ruby that I have ability." "Oh, that!" "Yes, that," said Kathleen. "But you needn't take such an unpleasant tone. I'm not being unpleasant about you giving so much time to writing your play." "No, you're not," said Joe. "But that's because you're more or less glad to have me occu pied. It gives you more time to spend with Paul and Fred."
