Sports Parade By Jack Cuddy New York, July 20 U.R Lady Luck got cockeyed with the heat over the week-end and shifted rollicking Rollie Hemsley straight from baseball's bone yard to the pennant-bound Yan kees when Catcher Buddy Rosar jumped the club and shuffled off to Buffalo. It was one of the screwiest double plays in major league history. Backstop Rosar tossed aside his Yankee uniform to try for a policeman's job in Buffalo. Then, because of this escapade, Ralston Burdett Hemsley was called to the rescue. Hemsley, the discarded playboy, who was released on Friday by the Cin cinnati Reds for weak hitting. One uncouth observer re marked: "In this goofy deal, the pot replaced the kettle." We talked to the three princi pals involved, and we will tell you exactly what they said. Rosar (on the telephone from Buffalo) explained that for a long time he had had a yen to become a po liceman, At last he had his chance, by taking a civil service examination during the week-end. He asked ' Marse Joo McCarthy of the Yanks who incidentally also lives in Buffalo if he could have a couple of days off, Marse Joe said no. So he dood it, anyway, Rosar, speaking on Sunday, said, "I took the examinations today, here in Buffalo the mental, physical, agility and written. If I have passed, I'll be admitted to the force. No, that doesn't mean that I'll quit baseball. I'll work on the force during the off-season, and take a leave of absence to play ball during the summer time. No, the draft had nothing to do with It. I'm in 3-A, I'm married and have a 15-months old daughter, Mary Ann, and my wife expects another baby any day now." McCarthy In the dressing room at Yankee stadium, be tween games of yesterday's dou bleheader with the White Sox, said, "Rosar asked me for a couple days off. I told him It was impossible what with Bill Dickey out for a week or so with a bad shoulder, leaving only rookie Kddie Kcarse, who needs more seasoning. "I knew I had to have an ex perienced catcher immediately, and I remembered that Hemsley had been released by th Reds on Friday. So I telephoned him at Cincinnati and ho took the job To keep within the 25-plnycr limit, I optioned Kearse to New ark, since Rosar sllll Is a mem ber of the club." Hemsley, who flew to New York and caught both ends of yesterday's doublrhcnder, also was interviewed In the stadium dressing room. He said, "I was sitting in my apartment at Cln cinnatl Saturday evening, won dering where I would go next I had a couple Irons in the fire but nothing too hot. "All of a sudden the phone rang and a guy says he's McCarthy of the Yanks offering me a Job. At first I thought somebody h is kidding me. But then I renllted It wasn't a rib and 1 felt so dnrned good thnt tears almost came to my eyes. What a feeling let out by the Rods on Friday and hired by the Yanks on Saturday, Yes, I guess It was the greatest break I ever got. Anyway, four hours later I was on a plane heading for New York." Turpin Wins 16th Game of Coast Season (Br the Aiuoeiat'd Prt.a) The Seattle Rainiers moved into a tie for fourth position in Pacific Coast league standings this week-end as a result of three successive one-run victor ies over Oakland while Port land's drive to get out of the cellar bogged down badly against Hollywood with three defeats. Farmer Hal Turpin chalked up his 16th win of the season yesterday with a tight four-hit performance against the Oaks. to win 3 to 2 in the opener. The Rainiers hit safely 10 times but were unable to bunch their bin- glcs for an impressive run total. In the nightcap, the Seattle squad pulled the game out of the fire in the seventh inning with one run to win 4 to 3 while two Rainier hurlers held the Oaks to five safeties. Saturday's game was won 7 to 6 after nipping a ninth inning rally of the Oaks fter one run was scored. Hollywood also won by 7 to 6 over Portland in Saturday's game and then pounded the Beavers for 25 hits yesterday to take the twin bill, 7 to 1 and 8 to 5. The Stars broke up a pitching duel in the eighth inning of the opener with six runs to break a one-all tie and then took an early lead in the nightcap which they 'never relinquished. The Beavers threw a short scare into the Oak ranks with a four run ninth inning but were halted before they could do real dam age. The Stars moved from seventh to sixth place in winning the double bill. The Los Angeles Angels con tinued their fast pace with a triple win over San Diego to lengthen their league leadership by two full games and clouted San Diego from undisputed pos session of third place to a tie for fourth. Angel pitchers made powder puff hitters out of the erstwhile slugging Padres, nearly shutting them out in both Sunday games, winning the first 3 to 1 and the second 6 to 1. Los Angeles' Sat urday margin was 7 to 3. Sacramento, ousted only last Friday from the top after a ten ure of several weeks, went into the week-end with a chance at a comeback in two doubleheaders. Instead, San Francisco downed the Solons three straight before losing Sunday's nightcap and took over third place by a single percentage point. The Seals won Saturday's games 4 to 3 and 10 to 0 and Sunday's opener 5 to 4. Sacra mento took the nightcap 11 to 7. First Game.
