Tuesday, October 21, 1941 The Capital Journal, Salem, Oregon Nine H". by Carl Anderson fdfjl AIRPLANES- ( ) j lit' v-. Q-xl AvWATKIN Silver Comet "Yesl . . He came today. . He hurried out to the cottage to get me." Luella began to look wildly around he. "Oh, Henry, we must find him. We must" A nurse heard her, and came over to where she and Henry were kneel ing upon the blanket. "Anything wrong?" she asked, "Tommy . . . Mr. Mclntyre," Lu ella cried. "The man who was on the cottage roof with me! Where is he?" "He's gone," the nurse replied quietly. "Gone? What do you mean?" "I'm sorry, but Mr. Mclntyre couldn't be rescued." "Oh, no no!" Luella began to sob heart-breakingly. "Oh, poor, dear Tommy , . ." She sank down upon a pillow. "Oh, God" Henry motioned to the nurse to leave them. He took Luella in his arms once more. "Don't cry like that, darling,1 he begged. "Please, don't ... I can't bear it. I had no idea you loved him that much." . Luella looked up quickly, her eyes swimming in tears. '.'Love him?" she said. "Yes ... I didn't know , . . I " "You're wrong, Henry!" Luella said, struggling for calm. "It's you I love . . . But Tommy was such a dear such a splendid person. So kind so sweet" She began to sob anew. "Henry, it's horrible horri ble being swept away like that.1 She laid her head against Henry's shoulder. He held it there, his own eyes filled with tears. . . . Once more the door of Drawing Room A closed softly. Once more The Silver Comet, the railroad's crack streamlined express, sped on into the night. And Luella and Henry Pell were alone. "Happy?" he asked, breaking in upon her thoughts. "Yes, darling," she said. "Happy that we are together again." "Luella and Henry until death them do part." Luella nodded. Henrv grinned and said: "All 1 need to make it perfect is some rice to shake out of my collar." He tilted Luella's face, looked down into her eyes. "All set to take the bitter with the better?" "Yes. Henry." The grin was gone from Henry's face. "I hone." he said seriously, "that all the bitter is over ... I think it is. too, darling." "So do I," Luella said. She sank down into a seat. "I reckon we were sillv belnor so hasty and cruel." "But sometimes it takes a lot of hard knocks and sufferings to make people appreciate each other." said Henry. He sat down beside Luella. took one of her hands be tween both of his. "How would you like to move back to the old home town?" "Henry!" Luella exclaimed. "I'd adore it!" "We can, if wis want to," Henry continued. "They're making some changes in the New York organiza tion, and I think all I've got to do is ask to be sent back to where I came from." He- took a deep breath "I've done some pretty deep think ing since I found your note, Luella. and I've decided I'd be a more val uable man at home than in New York." "But you love New York," Luella protested. "And your radio work? What about that?" "To heck with it!" said Henry "I've changed, I've grown up, and God knows it's time! ... I think I'd prefer living in the old home town, and Just visiting New York now and then." The Voice "I haven't told you yet," said Lu ella presently, "how sorry I am about misjudging you and and that Chicago trip." "Forget it, honey," said Henry. "Let's never refer to it again." "All right, let's not." Luella was silent a moment. 'There's one more thing I want to to get straight, Henry " "Yes? . . . What Is it?" "I've got to know once and for 11 time whether or not you really M I'M I, I.WBICHTI love Marie, and If you do, just why you came back to me." "It was infatuation, pure and simple," Henry said. "The country boy going to the city and being im pressed by the glamor girl who sang on the radio." "Thank you, Henry," Luella said. "I I feel better now." Luella tried to think of something more to say and couldn't. She took Henry's face between her palms, and kissed him. Then she got up and be gan to do things to her hair before the small mirror. Outside a waiter was telling everyone that dinner was being served in the dining car in the rear. "Hungry?" asked Henry. "A little," said Luella, "but first let's go back to the observation car and just loaf a bit." They went out of the drawing room, and back through car after car. holding hands, swaying a little with the motion of the speeding train. Just before they entered the observation car, standing in -the cramped vestibule, Luella looked up into Henry's face. "This time we really are starting out with complete understanding, aren't we?" she asked. "Yes, darling, we are," he replied. "No more neglect, no more Jump ing to conclusions." He bent down and kissed her and then they pushed open the door. Someone was working with the controls of the radio at the head of the observation section. And as they sat down to watch the occa sional lights as they whipped past, a rich, familiar voice rose behind them. "Moonlight on the Swananoa, An' mah man a-standin' by; Lovin me, holdin' me, Almos' make me cry . . Quietly Henry's hand found Lu ella's; they listened without a word. "Oh. Lawdy send him back." The voice broke; There was a sob in Marie's throat. And the song came to an end. The End The census bureau is using more than 100 million punch cards to turn Into statistics the answers to the 1040 Inquiries on the activities of over six million farms. These punch cards, similar to a music roll, are then run through electric tabulating machines for the pur pose of converting these statistics into totals. KSLM 13M Kilocycle!
