Wednesday, May 21, 1941 The Canifo! Journal,' Salem; Oreaon Nine Henry -' II Hji JfirehouseI W A. f Sk t a St a s RLUNb LHmt I By VIVIEN GREY I Quandary They were drvlng along the dirt lane by the river, Qetta between them, when Emily finally forced herself to say what she had been thinking all along, - "Why don't you go back to New York today?" ehe asked. "She muat he with some of her friends. Or some of them must have seen her." Roger stared ahead without speaking for a long time. "Why don't you?" Emily asked again. "I went once," Roger answered, his voice tight. "I think she hid from me. But whether she did or not, I'm not going again. If she comes back it will be because she wants to come." Emily started to protest, and gave It up when saw the the look on his face. They drove again in si lence. But before they reached the house Roger, spoke. "There's no use trying to pretend with you," he said. "You know I love her and want her back. It's only that I think Lovely had to find that out for herself." Joe Hulse stood over Lovely looking severely at her. "But what the heck did you come here for?" he demanded. "You know this Is one of the first places he'll look." Lovely shrugged, and said noth ing. "For a girl who's always known her mind," Joe went on, "I must say you're slipping fast. And be cause you don't know your mind now, you ought to clear out of here right away. I'm not the kind of fellow who can keep good resolu tions for two." He stared down at her with a half puzzled, half pos sessive look in his eyes. "You know. I think you came here because you were sure Roger would look for you here." It was the truth, and Lovely knew It. And he had not come. She felt undecided, lost She had money In her purse, and a checking ac count. She had had time to get to gether a few clothes, before she fled the Cosgrave Aouse. But long waiting was something she could not face. Nor could she go back to Oert, she knew as the days passed. It was not because of Ring, and it was not because of money. She could perfectly well pay her own way. It was something In Cert's eyes that forbade it. And one day, when Inaction and uncertainty had worn her patience thin, Lovely burst out to her sister: "Why don't you say it? Just what you think? I can take it." "Well, I wasn't really thinking anything. Lovely," Gert said hesl' tantly. "Only, It's you what you're doing now. It makes me feel all chilly and cold and empty In side. It frightens me. How any woman can leave her child and be hap" but whatever else Oert would have said died aborning. "You fooll You fooll She can'tl Lovely all but screamed. "Don't you see that I can't look at sunny wltfr out my heart breaking? If I don't see Oetta soon I'll go madr "If I felt that way I'd go back, Lovely," Oert said earnestly. "It isn't anything to be ashamed of going back, I mean. Women always have to do things like that. See what I've stood for Sunny. And it Isn't as If I wouldn't stand a thou sand times more If I was asked to. "Is that why you've stood it?1 Lovely asked quietly. "Of course. And then you love the father of your child, no matter what. If you didn't love him that way, that sort of to-the-end-of-the' world way he wouldn't be the fath er of your child It's s strange woman who doesn't stay with her cnuoren through thick or thin." The last had come broodlngly Lovely had the feeling that Oert had forgotten her momentarily, and was looking back along the years. Lovely thought, strangely, of that woman in Acapuloo known as Am anita Lily, and the way In which the had assumed authority over By r " n Copr. ftnj Tenure Svn&cm. Int Wot Id riiliM WCfvl j , ia t s. rw a - L Nl)KKhLLft her. Could it be that Oert was thinking of how their own par ents had deserted them, and could there be any connection between Lily and Oert's thought? Or was she merely wool-gathering, distrait from too much worry? Lovely was thoughtful as she started back to the Hulse's. It was true that her sister had been old enough when the family broke up to know something about it all. And she knew that somehow she did not fit the background against which she walked. Dingy buildings along a dingy street. Undernourish ed, pale children going through the motions of something they called play. Some of the chllren even stop' ped dodging trucks long enough to look at her in wonder. Her clothes were so definitely upper Fifth ave nue. Nor was it better at the Hulse's She paid her way there, and helped Mrs. Hulse with the work. She could do a great many things for her friends, and they appreciated them But two things were missing, and these were Roger and Getta. Perhaps three the spaciousness and freedom of life In the great house beside the Hudson. It had not taken her long, she reflected to come to demand something bet ter than she had grown up to ex pect. Ill get out, she told herself. I'll tell them tonight and I'll find a room somewhere alone. I am alone, even when I'm with people. And that she was. Lovely got a room In a quiet ho tel in the East Fifties and grew to wonder at how small a place New York was for every now and then on the street,' or shopping, or In a restaurant, she met someone she had known during her days with Roger. One day it was Marl, and Lovely tried to pass swiftly with. out speaking. Marl caught her arm and held on. To be continued Monmouth C. H.
