Elliott came up from Eugene Wednesday after noon to visit her husband, who Is assistant supervisor f the Willam ette national forest and who has been here directing the fire fight lng. They both went on to Breit enbush Springs to visit their daughter, Helen. Mrs. Elliott re called one time when Elliott was the local ranger and a fire broke out where Idanha now stands. El' llott was there helping In the fight not knowing a spot fire had start- ed near the ranger station. Mrs. Elliott said 500 pounds of dyna mite were stored In a barn at the station and she feared the hot em bers dropping would Ignite the old building. She did not add, though old residents yet tell it, how she threw wet sacks around lor pro' tectlon until help came, besides caring for her two small daugh ters. Aurora Legion Post Will Seat Officers Aurora At the regular meeting of Aurora Post No. 110, the following were nominated for the different .offices: commander, G. E. Fredrik son; first vico commander, W. V. Llndqvlst; second vice commander, H. W. B. Colvin and C. G. Pursley; adjutant, P. F. Sayre, St.; finance officer, George Gabriel; chaplain, J. Jayne; sergeant-at-arms, Har mon Ycary, C. M. McGregor, C. T. Hart; historia, Albert Ehlen; execu tive committee, P. Danielson, Frank Oliver, Walter Meek, Melvin Mah- lum, C. G. Pursley, M. Larson. Election of officers will be held at the next regular meeting, also delegates to the department con ventlon at Seaside will be elected. A no-host lunch will be served oy the unit and post following the business session. The remainder of the evening will comprise a so cial time for everyone. Men's Brotherhood Installs Officers Lebanon Tuesday evening follow ing dinner In the church dining room new officers were elected by the Men's Brotherhood of the Meth odist church. The program of the evening consisted of an address on lay activities by Lloyd Gllson. W. Guy Parker, president; Paul Chilcote, vice-president; Cecil Kam- bak, secretary; Wayne Forbis, treas urer; L. Gllson, Chilcote and J. M. Burtenshaw, district brotherhood committee. Warning Is Issued By Lebanon Chief Lebanon--Fire Chief Elmer Fitz gerald warned this week that city ordinance requires vacant lots must be kept free of weeds, grass and rub bish, and that with fire condi tions hazardous, local residents must comply with the ordinance. He al so stressed that fire permits must be obtained before burning rub bish or any other material on lots. Permits may be secured from Chief Fitzgerald or Assistant Chief Ken-j neth Fuller. Ernie Miller Meads Sfayfon Legion Post Stayton Ernie Miller was elect ed commander of Stayton post, No. 58, at the regular meeting on Wed nesday night In the city hall. Oth ers officers are J. F. Lau, first vice commander; Harry Rishel, second vice-commander; Lester Smith, ad jutant; Oliver Forrette, finance of ficer; Charles Johnson, chaplain; Earl Allen, sergeant-at-arms; O. M. Gulliford, historian; Harry Hum phreys, Eugene Dltter, Selmer Brown, Anton Swaboda and Percy Hiatt, executive board. Delegates chosen to attend the state conven tion of the Legion at Seaside are Lester Smith, Joseph Pleser and G. W. DeJardin. Alternates are Sim F. Etzel, C. M. Gulliford and Ernie Miller. The post will hold its regular meeting In August. Lebanon Sees Building Boom This Last Week Lebanon The R. W. Merryweath er tract In Franklin street, property containing 10 acres, has been sold to George Harden, Lebanon contractor, and will be subdivided and develop ed into between 40 and 48 building lots, It was announced . here this week. Harden plans to begin con struction on the first five units the middle of August. Price paid for the property was $3500 cash, according to the S. C. Myers real estate office, which handled the transaction. Another major transaction of the week was the sale of the Edwin Johnson property In Rose street to Thomas Gazeley, Portland contrac tor. Gazeley is launching imme diate construction of four resi dences, one of which has already been sold, it was reported. The property sold for $400, Myers, who handled this deal also, announced. Additional new dwelling are to be constructed by Bert Cotton, lo cal merchant, who secured a build ing permit to erect two $2100 homes at Fifth and B streets, and by Don Davis, Lebanon business man, who was granted a permit to build a $1500 structure at Oak and River streets. Harden plans to subdivide the Merryweather tract, building streets and otherwise developing the pro perty, after completion of eight homes in Franklin street. The homes will be built for rental or sale purposes. They will consist of five rooms, and sell for $2500 or less. Gazeley's structures will sell for between $2500 and $3000, it was re ported. Luncheon Served For Church Women Keizer A Joint meeting of the Ladies' Aid society and the mis sionary society of the Jason Lee church was held at the home of Mrs. Joseph E. Bartruff. A no- hostess luncheon was served at noon. This was followed by the devo tional meeting, led by Mrs. S. Raynor Smith. Mrs. H. B. Carpenter pre sented the lesson study. Those attending were Mrs. Gor don Black, Mrs. Lena Townsend, Mrs. Fred T. Barker, Mrs. W. P Miller, Mrs. A. Plett, Mrs. Belle Roberts, Lorena Chadwlck, Mrs. H, E. Foote, Isabel Roberts, Mrs. W. E. Benjamin, Susie E. DeLap, Cora V. Kennedy, Erma Kllnger, Margaret Clark, Alma Black well, Marie Putnam, Elsie Carpenter, Jes sie Gies, Mina Bates, Essie Field. Store Purchases Truck Mill City The local Red and White store purchased a new Dodge truck this week for delivery ser vice. Owners of the establishment are R. L. Faust and W. J. Robin son. Sodality Members Register for Climb Mt. Aneel Twenty-three mem bers of the Young Men and Young Women's sodalities have registered to join In a Mt. Hood climbing party Sunday, August 4. At the meeting this week plans were made to leave from Mt. An gel early Sunday morning, but after consultation the committee is try ing to rearrange the plans and leave Mt. Angel Saturday night and lodge at Rafferty's hotel at Gov ernment Camp. The climbing party should not exceed 30, so those who wish to make the climb are asked to register with Ivo Bau man or Maxine Bernlng, prefects of the sodalities, as soon as possible. If the party leaves Saturday night it will be necessary to go In private cars instead of by bus. Expenses of the trip will be In creased slightly by the over night stop. There will be a priest with the party so that all will be able to hear mass. A final meeting to complete arrangements and give final instructions will be held at 8 o'clock Tuesday evening, July 30. Silverton Robert Norton Celebrate Birthday; Yachats Popu lar for Vacation Mrs. Nora Norton of Portland came to Jefferson to help her son, Robert, celebrate his 13th birthday anniversary. Robert and his sister, Marjorie, make their home with their grandmother, Mrs. Ida Tho mas, and aunt, Mrs. Edna B. Allen. Mrs. Harold Merrltt of Renton. Wash., was a guest Wednesday night and Thursday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Pierce Jacob and Mrs. S. M. Green. . Mrs. Merrltt Is a for mer resident of Albany and wai on her way there to visit relatives. Mrs. C. M. Smith and her grand daughter, Jean Thurston, and her house guest, Mrs. Mabel Bolce of Eureka, spent several days recently at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Mil lard Price at Yachats. Mrs. Bolce, who has been spending several weeks with Mrs. Smith, left from Yachats for her home in Eureka. Mrs. Carolyn Patterson of Port land has been a guest at the home of her brother. Dr. J. O. Van Win kle, this week. The doctor's son. Richard, Is spending two weeks at the Silver Creek Falls recreation camp. Mrs. Zera Thompson and four daughters left Wednesday for Grid ley, Calif., for a visit with rela tives. Guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Henderson were Mr. and Mrs. Harry Dixon of Camas, Wash and their son, Ray Dixon of Port land.
