Thursday, March 21, 1940 The Capital Journal, Salem, Oregon Three ( 15 CCC Youths In Hospital from Truck Crash Grants Pass, March 21 (ff) Fit teen CCO enrollees were rushed to Josephine General hospital this morning. An attendant said they suffered "broken arms, legs, injur ed chests and backs. We don't have the names. There are three doc tors treating them and we will be busy all day." A salesman said a CCC truck overturned near Hayes hill on the Eedwood highway southwest of here. Lt. Mtckly at Camp Gasquet, 68 miles from here in northern Cali fornia, said he had Just been noti fied that the injured youths were from his camp. He said they had Just completed their enrollment and were being brought here to en 7 train for their homes in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and North Carolina. State orflcer Jay Williams said he was told the driver of the lead ing truck In a caravan of three doz ed at the wheel. There were skid marks at a curve, Williams said. The canvas-topped truck turned upside down but its wooden stakes held It off the 23 passengers. Critically injured: Ivan Lee, Puraell. York, Term., frac tured iplne and other Injuries. There are approximately 460 homes coming under this designa tion. To add to the Improvements of these homes, the sidewalk paving is progressing in all the districts and Friday morning worn started on the paving on Plaza street which has been the subject of controversy be tween the city and the WPA over construction of retaining walls and aprons. The city council at the last meeting ordered work to go ahead, with the building of retain ing walls held up until the regional office of the WPA in San Francis co makes final decision In the matter.
