Had Uiem tested by an expert today, and they're the real thing, Ho values them at fifty thou sand dollars, so they've stored them away In a safety deposit vault at headquarters until we find out to whom they belong." He leaned back In his chair. "Who would be your choice for the writer of that let ter, sir?" he asked, his eyes on the other man's face. "The letter about the diamonds?" McBain frowned. "I don't under stand It," he said In bewilderment. "Diamonds love letters! Edgar Murchlson! Actually, Forrester it all sounds perfectly preposterous and most unbelievable. If they're Murchlson's diamonds . . . how about his wifo for a guess?" "Why should she write It? If she wanted to know, why didn't she ask It, ask help in finding them she denies that he possessed any! No, she didn't write It." "That woman," he said angrily. "It sounds like one of her tricks. Trying to cause trouble as usual. Knows some. thing and doesn't quite understand, and goes spying about until she satis lies herself. And no one could have been quite so guileless If she d had guilty knowledge. No, I think we're off the track there." Mcllnlii shook his head heavily.
