He brooded (or a space, then seemed to get a thought. "You wait a minute, fel la." ' H. turned and took a much thumbed card from the top of the cash register behind the counter. . "Tills her, card," be declared, "say when Horace and Morris works. They says If anybody asts for 'em when they ain't here, I should give 'em this." Bill took th, card. Scrawled In pencil on it was th, legend: HORACE MORRIS EAST DIPTENDERPER'S PENNY ---- ARCADE -, .. EAST 4SND STREET -.' ! "Hal" said B1U. "Theatrical peo ple, h?" The delicatessen man grinned at him. Ever since learning of Wil liam's mission the delicatessen man had comported himself after the manner of one who possesses su perior knowledge. His present grin had a faintly patronizing quality about It Bill, having noted the information on the card, handed It back. . . "Well," h, said, "so long. Thanks my much." Then, enchanted at leaving the delicatessen man and his sinister leer, he went out and hailed a taxi. Dlffenderfer's Penny Arcade of fers Its patrons a wide variety of amusements at, as the name Implies, small cost. Wherefore William Steele, Jostling his way through the crowded lobby, found himself mlng I ling freely with the hoi polloi. But j h, pushed on doggedly and entered th, tawdry tobacco-reeking estab lishment. It Is supposed that, had William been apprised earlier of the sartorial influences prevailing In this para dise of the penny, he would hav, ac complished Its Invasion in more suitable habiliments. As It was, he was attired in a perfectly-cut linen suit, brown tie cool with white polka dots and a Panama hat with a rac ily-colored band. To say that he was distinctive her, would be to under' state grossly. He was, as the poem his It, last, loneliest, loveliest, ex qulslte, apart. And, being such, he excited comment, much of It un favorable. But though there was a suspicion of veiled animosity in the air, no one seemed to care to manifest his disapproval of William in a bust' nessllke way. In th, days of his collegiate magnificence Mr. Steele had been the mainstay of the Stan " ford eleven's attack. Upon on, oc casion, after a particularly neat bit of attacking, he had been al luded to by a phrase-sllnglng news paper scribe as the "Torrid Terror of th. Rose Bowl." Now, despite his life of ease and luxury, he still sported shoulders as befit a Torrid Terror of the Rose Bowl. And tough egg of the first part respects such shoulders in tough egg of the second part, even though tough ,gg of th second part be camouflaged by a whit, linen suit. As a conse quence, the progress of William through Dlffenderfer's Penny Ar cade was Impeded physically by none. Th, man In charge of the shoot ing gallery, however, accosted him hospitably. William said that no, he did not want to shoot a duck. He was on the point of plunging deeper Into the Jungle of Dlffenderfer's when it occurred to him that the shoot ing gallery man might be of serv ice. He paused, therefore, and drew SO cent from bis pocket. "Listen," he said, I don't want to shoot. But here's a half a buck It's yours If you'll tax, me to the East brothers. I'm told they work here." Don' know 'em,- he said at last, eyeing the 60 cents womanly. 'Hell.- Bill said. 'Sure they wolk here?" asked the shooting gallery man. "A fellow said they did," replied Bill. "Horace and Morris East." Th, sinister countenance of the shooting gallery man cleared. He reached Jk grimy paw for th SO cents. Well now why didn' ya say ya was lookta' fer Horace and Morris in de foist place?" he said aggrive- edly. "Sure, I know dem guys. C'mon. I'll taks ya." ' "Where?" said Bill mystified. Phantasmagoria The shooting gallery man pointed to a platform in the rear of Dlffen. derfer's. ' William, following his finger, started. Upon the platform was th odd est collection of humanity that be had ever seen. At first glance it seemed a confused phantasmagoria such as might appear to a mind re duced by a couple of doeen chant' pagne cocktails. It finally resolved itself, however, Into a lady of Him alayan proportions; another lady whose countenance, hands, arms and shoulders were undeniably lilac-colored; a gentleman who either was, or cleverly contrived to live the Impression of being a axeie ton sitting on a straight-backed chair; an orangutan; a lean cadaverous Individual with side whiskers who was, conservatively sneaking:. 10 feet tall: a girl of de. butant age wreathed In snakes; what appeared to be a man with two heads and two bodies; and a family of midget. Oazlng upon this likely looking assemblage wu. 11am Jaw dropped and he permlt- t1 himself the luxury 01 a gasp. But had he been accustomed to life backstage at Dtffenderferl, he would have eschewed such ruoe ness. For then he would hav, known the facts. The lady who must have required the service of a derrick In order to get out of bed was simply Mm. Oiusle Zilch, alias Madame AO- dull ah. The Pattest Woman In The World, weight MO lbs. The orangutan was not an orangutan at all but mmlv. In nrlvate life, a Mr. Moss, th father of five children, none of whom exhibited any of th, more sinister simian proclivities. Mr. Moss, during his working hours, was enticingly billed as The Missing Link. Further, William would have known that the side-whlsMraa mat. vldual, besides being The Tallest Man on Earth, was a unerer rrom chranle dvsTXDSla: that the repiue wrapped debutant answered to the name of Pearl and the wrapping was lust her favorite python, Anastasta: and th gentleman with two heads and two bodies was not a gentleman but two gentlemen, Messrs, Horace and Morris East or seventn avenue that the midget were gentle, Ood fearing people despite a wide cxper lence of circuses, sideshows nd vaudeville. But William, a Philistine. knew not the things. He couia only gap at th assortment, con vinced, as Hamlet was Dsiora nun. that something In the nature of de cay was going on In Denmark. "Coon," said th shooting gal Carl Anderson lery man, nudging his elbow. "Dey won't bite, ya. Dere nuttln' but freaks." 'You're telling me?" said Wll Ham. He suffered himself to be propelled forward. During his collaboration with the shooting gallery man' a dis cussion had been In progress on the raised platform. The subject of this discussion was William. At the moment of his entry Into Dlf fenderfer's he had been spotted by the freaks, as a brilliant butter fly who chooses to cast In his lot with a regiment of black beetles must expect to be spotted by all and sundry. And a curiosity con cerning his identity had been estab lished at once.
