Melvln Johnson, 3738 Parking Meter Offers Show Much Variety Parking- meters, if and when they are adopted by the city of Salem, will cost somewhere between 25.95 and f 65 each, and the terms of purchase will be as liberal as could be expect ed. And It will b found, that while ' pair king meters art , comparatively new method of eoUactlnf public money, they are made In a variety of waya by half a down or mora manu facturing concern,. At the city council meeting Mon day night proposal not bids were received from six companies. They had been Invited by resolution of the council. But, while) th council haa authorised Itself by another resolu tion to install parking metere, It la not yet certain that they will be aet Up in thla town, for there la atrong opposition from rather formidable quart re. So the proposal were merely referred to the apeclal traffic committee for atudy. Here are the proposals: From the Paclflo Parking Meter corporation of 8an Francisco Thla company offers a meter manufac tured by M. H. Rhodes, Inc, and Its trade name le "Mark-Time." The leaat expensive of seven models of fered la 125.99 per meter, and the most expensive 159. Must Enforo Ordinance The company offers to give the city a trial of not leea than six months. During thla time the me ter ordinances must be enforced strictly, and the olty make regular collections from the meters, de positing the money 'In a special bank account or In escrow. Out of the collections 39 per cent woujd be paid to the city and 19 per cent to M- H. Rhodes. Inc. At the conclusion of the six months the city would hare the fol lowing option: . (a) To request the removal of the meters and poata, and restora tion of sidewalk, to 1 satisfactory condition. This would be done, un. der bond if required, by the Pacific Parking Meter corporation, at no expense to' the city. When the city had ordered removal of the meters their entire obligation would cease and such gums ss had been paid to the city during the trial period would be retained by the city. (b) To ' continue the metered parking system, and to continue the division of collections aa above out lined until the full sums due for each meter had been made to M. H. Rhodes, Inc., the sums paid during the trial period to be credited to the clty'a account. e) To i continue '. the metered parking system and to purchase the Mark-Time metera outright for cash, at a discount of 10 per cent on the then unpaid balance within 30 days from the conclusion of the trial period, the sums already paid to be credited to the olty. With each 100 metera ordered M. H. Rhodes, Inc., would supply four additional meter heads and one self-mailing service git. rainy and Nickel Used From the Martin Timing Device company, Springfield, Mass. Thla company offers a semi-automatic type of meter which It claims la superior to the full automatic- It will give la minute parking for a penny or an hour for a nickel.
