While Coach Bailey has lost Don Mabee from the Grizzly squad, be still retains such men as ettton and Krelder in the backfield. and Ver- teges have been smoothing up the Bailey teaches an aggressive type -of football. Including an off tackle thrust which opponents have found difficulty in combatting. Coach Harold Hauk and his pro teges have seen- smootlnf up the rough spots in their own defense during the week, while at the same time taking all precautions against a surprise attack. The starting lineup will be Identical with the one which exploded the fireworks against Albany week ago. In recent years McMlnnvllle and Salem have played offensive foot ball almost to the exclusion of de fense. The result has been large scores and thrills for -the specta tor. The kickoff tonight Is ached' uled for o'clock. Skits and Scratches By Fret Zimmerman Capital Journal ports Editor There is strong probability that Frisco" Edwards may be advanced In the profession of calling balls and strikes and making hair line decisions afield. Well, he has earned It, judg. lng by reports which have drifted down this way from the Western In ternational league where Frisco wore the protectors during the past seas on. It Is extremely difficult to break Into the charmed circle of profes sional baseball officials and oft-times politics enters Into the matter, es pecially where men of equal ability are being considered. Edwards knows his baseball and the fact that he created such a favorable Impression In one of the youngest leagues In the country Is all In his favor. Amby gchlndler drew the spot light in the recent Webfoat Trojea melee at Los Angeles, bat these who saw the game say the young fellow had considerable assistance from his mates. One thing which pertiesuartr Im pressed one eye witness was the thorough manner the Trojans went about that Mil task of knocking every nun wearing a graen shirt off his feet No mat ter where the play was In pro treas, If a green shirted warrior waa still on his feet M feet away a Trojan went after him. There waa no looking around to see what had become of the ball car rier. Coach Jones uses somewhat different tactics an forward pass particularly on the defensive aide. Most eoaehes Instruct their ends to bora la and get rid of the passer Just aa eultaly aa pos sible. In the Lea Angeles game one or two opponents would stsy with the Oregon passer, obstruct ing his view as much aa pos sible, but Disking no dives for him. If he ran back they kept after him and only when they aaw they had a chance to spill him for a good loss did they close In. Apparently this talk about a com plete sell-out for the Oregon-Oregon Stat game at Eugene Saturday Is not a publicity stunt. Tickets are changing hands at ts a throw whtls. much to Its regret, tht graduate man ager's office Is returning cash to late applicants. No need for anybody In these parts to bt disappointed, since football, just as clsssy as that at Eugene, will be seen on two success ive nights at Sweetland field. Thurs day night Salem and McMlnnvllle engage In a scoring bee and then on Friday evening Willamette will endeavor to uphold Its record of not losing a homecoming game in a dec ade. Whlttler college will do Its best to send the homecoming alumni home In a cloud of gloom. Yesterday's long practice session plainly showed the effect of bard work on the Bearcat passing attack. Illinois tied them. Carnegie Tech pulled an upset that surprised even themselves. Nom Navy, strong but not great, reigns as a favorite to whip the Irish Saturday for the fourth time In five years. "Navy has a fighting tradition. too, Irish Coach Elmer Layden said. "But they do something about It on the field. It's time Notre Dame began to tight." Layden was aroused not only by the tie and defeat, unexpected as they were, but by a miserable show. lng of the varsity against the frosh. The second round sends the sophomores coached ay Andy Van Otten, against Parrlsh. on O linger field. The Juniors with Verdell Ragadell in charge will try their luck against Lloyd CUrod's Leslie grldsters. This contest will take place on Leslie field. The league this season appears to be much better balanced. In weight as well as experience. Last Friday's games which resulted In but two touchdowns being scored, and one of these the most freakish nature, Indicates real contests ahead. The Sophomores have received added strength since a week ago by the recruiting of the Scott twins and one of the Volehok boys. Coach VanOtten, however, expects to make few changes In his starting lineup. Coach Tom Drynan has been drilling his squad on reverses, for ward passes and laterals, with Doerfler, Douglas and Waller in the backfield, Panish should give the sophs a real run. Leslie possesses a group of boys larger than is the case at the south end of the city. They appear well drilled and while they were not able to gain any great quantities of yard age last week, they kept the sophs on the uneasy seat throughout. A high pass from center which went Into the end tone gave the sophs their touchdown. The Juniors have a slight edge on experience, but against Farrish last week were slow In getting un der way. They put up a great defensive battle when Parrish threatened, but were fooled by some of the trickery of the Juniors. Both games are free to the pub lic .
