To cheek on Fanning, Nelll finds him at his hotel and geta acquainted at the bar. Fanning grrea him knock out drone In whiskey and then sear ches MelU'a papers, taking a snapshot of Janet. Next noon Nelll awakens to find Janet, Fanning and Fannlng's yacht gone. A mysterious phone call tells him Janet Is aboard the yacht In Abealom'a Harbor and "In bad trouble." Chapter Beren Boa To Absalom's At 4:4S that afternoon the bus for Absalom pulled out of the termi nal on Redwood street, and headed south. Nelll Tryon sat by a window looking out with a wooden face. Now that he had an objective, he had steadied; he could wait. After thinking it over, ht had decided to handle thli matter by himself quietly. He wished to avoid subject ing. Janet to any ugly publicity. He bad dr eased himself In a rough sur veyor outfit Including kalkhl bree ches and knee boots In order to be ready for anything. The bus was a small one for local traffic, and the passengers were all residents of the southern counties who had been to town for a day's hopping. Nelll as the only "foreign tf aboard received many curious glancea which made him slightly uneasy because he dldnt want to be too well remembered afterward. The driver, whom the passengers addressed as "Joey," appeared to be the main circulating medium of gos sip for the counties. He was a well-set-up young fellow with a snappy fedora on one side of his head, and he thought well of himself. He Im parted the local news to his pas sengers and received what they had In return. Nelll paid little attention to the talk back and forth. The principal subjects were crops and flahln'. But he pricked up his ears When ho heard a voice ask Joey wnat was the latest from Absalom's. Joey said: "There was a dandy little yacht come into the harbor before dawn. she busted a gear or something out In the bay. I fetched her engl neer up to town this morning to nave a new one made. He calcu lated to go back with me this eve nlng, but he ain't turned up, so 1 reckon It wasnt finished In time.' Good I thought Nelll. The yacht is suu mere. -wnat s the yacht s name?" some body asked. "Nadjl." "What the hell's that meant" "Dogged If I know, Henry." "Who's her ownerr" "dent named Barrett from New York." New York was too far away to be of any Interest to them, and the conversation passed to other mat ters. "Joey, did you hear that Jake Stivers hauled seine at Battle Is land yesterday and pulled In 3,000 pound of rock?" "No kidding I" . "Oemmcn, It's a fact! At 10 cents a pound that's WOO In one haul." . "That money will burn a hole In Jake's pants, certain. Bet he comes out In a new automobile, Sunday." A they bowled down the con crete road, the afternoon shadows lengthened and the passengers got off one by one. Finally there were only two left for Absalom's. The driver kept turning his head to east an inquisitive eye at the stran ger. At last be said: "An you acquainted tn Absa lom mister?" "No. Never been there before "What's your business then, may I ask?" "Mo business. Thought I'd like I'd r "You alnt brought no tackle." "Well, I wasn't sura what need, IU get It there." "Ain't often a fellow comes down alone to go fishing." "Oh, I reckon I can Join on to some party." "Where are you going to stop?" "There's a hotel. Isn't there?" "Sure, there's Wickes's hotel, but you'd do better In one of the board ing houses." Well, I'll go to the hotel tonight and look round in the morning. "What's the name, mister?" Ford Wheatley." "When from?" "Baltimore." "Who you work for there?" "I represent a New York firm." And so on. And so on. As they came over the top of low hill, Joey pointed out their destination far off to the left. Nelll saw, on a little promontory almost surrounded by blue water, a vil lage of white houses dazzling In the level rays of the sun. The wide mouth of the river lay beyond, and still farther off, the misty expanse of the Chesapeake. Nelll hardened as he looked at the pretty scene. There lay his Job. As they turned the next corner in the road, four gigantic ships loomed before them moored side by side, and making a little forest of masts and funnels. It was a sur prising sight to come upon in that simple countryside. "See them ships?" said Joey. Them's what we took from Ger many, after the war. It's a sight, mis. terl" "what an they doing down here?" asked Nelll. "The shipping board keeps them down hen because there's good shelter and deep water, and it dont cost nothing." "An they Just rusting away?' "No, Indeed. Old Captain Btckel and three men lives aboard, and they hires what painters and oilers they want by the day. They're kept in Al shape all right. Once a month they turn the engines over with compressed air." "What good are they?" "I dont know," said Joey. "Some say they'll be wanted for trans. porta In the next war. Others say It would save the taxpayers money if they was sold for scrap. "I dare say," said NeUl. A minute or two later they were In the village. The river lay on one side, the Inlet that constituted the harbor on the other, the mouth of the river and the bay out In front. The simple frame houses of the fishermen and the lack of trees. the all-surrounding water and the boats at anchor gave the place a sea-going character. Then was tang of salt In the air. It was about eight o'clock and still light when they pulled up in front of Longcope's general store which faced the harbor. Nelll eyes Instantly fastened on the trim little yacht lylrg there. A crowd had gathered on the porch of the ston to greet the bus and he de cided to wait a little until dark before going out to the yacht. It would attract less attention. "Hey, Wlckseyl" shouted Joev. "Here's a lodger for you." The hotel was next door to the ston. It was a staring clapboard ed building of several stories out of keeping with the old villa ea. The proprietor, a slack-looking fat man, came forward and NctQ sub mitted to being shown a. room, but declined dinner.
