WEDNESDAY, JULY 21, 1937 12 THE CAPITAL JOURNAL, 5ALEM, OREGON FEAR EFFECT OF INVENTIONS IN THE FUTURE Washington, July 21 tJPtK pic-1 ture of the American scene 20 years hence, in which strange new de vices dwarf recent inventions, has led President Roosevelt to recom mend "continuing surveying agen cies." to keep national policies abreast of machine advances. The national resources commit tee, aided by scientists and re search experts, spread out the re sult of its scrutiny of far reaching developments, hailed fhe electric eye as "the greatest invention of the Twentieth century," and recom mended long time study. "This report holds out the hope that we can anticipate some of the effects of major inventions," the president said, "and make plans to meet new situations that will arise as these inventions come into widespread use." Commenting on the effect on labor of industrial changes caused by elec trical and mechanical developments, he observed: "While it Is certain that much of the unemployment caused by the march of technical advance is ab sorbed by new occupations born of new industries, it is equally true that in the meantime labor may pay a very heavy price through the re adjustment and adaptation neces sary on the part of workers whose Jobs are affected by change." Study of thpsp, changes and ad vances, he said, is "one of our moet Important American planning prob lems." John W. O'Leary. Chicago offi cial of the United States chamber of commerce, declared "the pre mise of the report is all wrong." "Facts show that employment has increased rapidly during the last 100 years," he said, "as new machines have been developed more persons have been given pobs." J . I Hill : 1 ' LADY AT BAR.
