OREGON SENATORS DEFEAT WEST SIDE CLUB, PORTLAND, 5-4 WOODBURN JUNIORS SMOTHER SALEM LEGION TEAM 17 TO 4 SUNDAY MONDAY, JUNE 13, 1932 FOREMAN'S HIT IN 9TH INNING CINCHES GAME The Salem Senators broke Into the win column of the State base ball league when they defeated the West Side club of Portland, 5 to 4 at dinger field Sunday afternoon 1n a slow but nevertheless well play ed game. Going Into the last half of the ninth Inning with the score knotted 4 to 4, Trux Foreman pop ped a Texas leaguer Into right field which scored Walt Erickson from second base with the winning run. The absence of three regulars from the toam-Orlbble. Hibbard and Ashby, necessitated a big shift in the Senator lineup. The absence of the trio did not weaken the in field a bit although It slowed up the outfield to some extent. Walt Erick son was brought In from left field to Play third and he did a whale of a Job of It. He handled four chances without a bobble and handled the position well. "Squeak" Wilson on the mound for Salem, fanned 13 batsmen and yielded but seven hits. He turned in a nice game and deserved to win. Treadway Charles for the visitors was not quite as effective and was forced to leave the hill In the fifth after filling the bases. Folk, his successor, yielded but two hits in the three and a fraction innings he pitched. The West Side youngsters collect ed two runs In the first inning on two hits and an error. They added two more in the fifth, when Charles hit for three bases over Rogers' head and then Joe Gordon hit for four bases in the same location, the ball hitting In front of the fielder anJ then bounding past him for a home run. After being held to two hits and no runs in the first two innings, the Senators broke the spell In the third when George Scales connected with a groove ball and sent It rolling to the fence In right field for a home run. The locals knotted the score in the fourth. With two away, Pete McCaffcry was hit on the arm and went to first. It looked like a double play or a force out on Wilson's shot Into second base but Gordon Juggled Leach's, throw and both runners were safe. Scales was walked bin Adams came through with a single to score McCaffery. The visitors went ahead once more In their half of the fifth, but the Senators came right back to tie it up. Walt Erickson singled to right field and Foreman walked. Bashor and Rogers flew out while Erickson scored on McCaffery's single. With Foreman on third and with McCaf fery on first they proceeded to pull a double steal out of the box with Trux scoring. Wilson was walked and then Ray Brooks decided to make a change. He sent Folk Into the box. Scales got his second walk on the day but Adams made the third out when he fanned. The score remained tied until the last half of the ninth. Erickson, the first man up, was given a base on balls and promptly pilfered second. A moment later he clattered home with the winning run when foreman sent up a Texas leaguer which three men were unable to field. (IP) Owners of motor truck transportation lines In Pennsylvania will be asked by the state to reduce the working hours cf their drivers. The move is being made by the state bureau of high way patrol and safety as a meant of reducing accidents. Records of the bureau showed that during April two of the driven In volved In fatal accidents were truck operators who had been at the wheels of their vehicle at least 24 hours without sleep. (IP) Boys at tending the Perkins Institute for the blind here, may be sightless, but that doesn't prevent them from competing in the most active of sports. Annually they meet the boys from the New York Institute for the blind in a track meet, which comprises 50 and 75-yard dashes, in which the sprinters are guided by taut wires; the hop, step and Jump, the stand ing broad and high Jumps, and the shot put. Many of the blind youths have become remarkably proficient In certain sports. ST. LOUIS JINX HOLDS. SENATOR DEFEATED TWICE By Associated Press Pot the Information of American league pitchers, the one sure way of stopping the Washington Senators is to put onra St. Louis Browns uni form. The Senators can hold their own with the rest of the league but as soon as they see one of Bill Rel iefer's elbowers take the mound they roll over and play dead. So far they have played the Browns seven times and the Browns have won six games, three of them by shutouts. Reliefer's outfit won both games of a double-header yesterday, 6-3 and 4-0, and boosted their average above the .500 mark for the first time this season. The first game was a disconcerting affair, what with Carl Fischer, former Senator, in a Brown uniform, and Dick Coffman, former Brown, pitching for the Sen ators. Fischer had all the better of the argument as he held Washing ton to seven hits. Coffman gave way to a pinch hitter In the fifth after allowing six hits and five runs. Wal ter Stewart pitched his second shut out over the Senators in the night cap, allowing only three hits. In the National league, the Chi cago Cubs stretched their lead to a game and a half by winning a wild 13-inning battle from the Boston Braves. 5-3. The Cubs won out on doubles by Jurges and Herman and a single by Moore. Guy Bush went the route for the leaders and allow ed only ten hits. Art Shires' homer in the seventh sent the game Into extra Innings. ILLAHEE CLUBMEN WIN OVER ALBANY The Illahee Country club golf team defeated the Albany club on the lattcr's course Sunday fore noon, 32'i to 12&. Every member of tne Illahee team won points lor his club. Following the tournament illahee players were guests of the Albany club at a luncheon. Illahee will be host to Tillamook next Sunday. BROOKS WINS FROM AMITY CLUB, 10-3 Brooks Leading from the start, the Brooks club of the Cascade lea gue defeated Amity here Sunday af ternoon 10 to 3. Ted and Lou Girod each hit for three bases, while Earl Ramp connected safely three times out of four. Brooks and Woodburn are tied for the lead In the north section, with fire wins and one loss each. Scio Turner won a Cascade lea gue game here Sunday afternoon by defeating Scio 12 to 8. Ninety-year-old Henry Wallace advocates a careful diet: regular eating hours; plenty of milk and water: avoidance of stimulants and tobacco and hard work. Wives Of Club Men Ban Night Meetings Saginaw, Mich. U Wives of Ex change club members took over the club's weekly luncheon meeting and voted unanimously to ban night meetings. A husband's place Is In the home. helping his wife with household tasks at night," a resolution passed by the wives read. The wives agreed, however, with Miss Bemice R. Bibbs a speaker, who said: 'The reason husbands tell so many lies is because wives ask too many questions." Silverton outscored Salem, 6 to 5, Saturday at Eureka avenue diamond here. The Intensely hot weather didn't stop one of htc best kames ever witnessed on the home field. Getchel showed poor con trol against Silverton's good control. Silverton scored 5 runs off Salem's first pitcher, Getchel, and 1 off the second pitcher, Serdotz. Keunzi went fine for six Innings, then be came tired under the heat and al lowed 3 Salem runs, brining the score to 6 to 5 In Silverton's favor, which remained final. After the 3 runs on Keunzi, Jell pitched and held the visitors pat. Silverton didn't get or give any breaks but good base running1 by them and poor fielding on Salem juniors' part when errors means runs, gave Sil verton the margin. Silverton Juniors have only six errors in four games. The two losses for the local team have been to Woodburn and Salem. Two more cames are scheduled, one with Woodburn Saturday here and the other at Stayton Sunday. If Salem outscores Woodburn in their game scheduled for next Sun day and Silverton beats Woodburn Saturday, the results will throw three teams into a tie. Schwab, father of the well known high school baseball stars, Is Silverton's coach. Stayton pitched good ball the first three inning. The visitors scored 1 in the eighth Inning and 2 in the ninth. The game was played Sunday afternoon here. Leffler. pitching for Woodburn. struck out 15 men while three pitchers, Serdotz, Penny and Gatchell took turns on the mound for Salem, Salem led with a score of 1 to 0 until the fourth inning when Oberst started things for Wodburn with a HENDRIE BEATEN BY WOODMANSEE IN GOLF PLAY It took 36 holes of golf for Dr. Woodmansee and Don Hendrie to settle their match In the spring handicap of the Salem Golf club. After completing the first 18 holes all square, Woodmansee defeated his opponent at the end of the 36th Woodmansee will play Dave Eyre during the week in the second round of the first flight. Serdotz started for Salem, was replaced by Penny In the fifth for one inning and in the sixth Gatchell, a former Woodburn boy, took the mound and held .the Woodburnites to no runs for the remainder of the game. Goget held down the receiv ing end for Woodburn and Hart for Salem. A feature of the game was a double play by Salem in the first innin, Salstrom to Elliott to Delaney. Of the Woodburn batters 5 hits were credited to K. Evans, 3 to Landsen and 2 to Saalfeld in two times at bat. There was a good turnout of rooters and spectators. EUGENE TOWNIES LEAD STATE CLUBS Albany, June 13 The Eugene Townies grabbed the lead in the State baseball league here Sunday when they defeated the Albany Al cos, 11 to 0. It was the first game of the season for Albany and the second for Eugene. Dowllng, cen ter fielder for Albany, hit a home run while K. Smith and Sucr for Eugene hit three baggers. The score: Eugene 11 15 1 Albany e 12 4 Batteries: Bloom, Wiltshire and Bishop; Woodard and Wilkinson. BEND BEATEN Bent, June 13 The Pacific Out fitting team of Portland beat Bend. 18 to 15, In a free hitting contest .Sunday. The game was marred by many errors while the score being knotted on three occasions. Captain Woods of the Bend Elks smashed out a home run In the fourth In ning with the bases full to tie the score at 7-all. Roberts, left fielder for the visitors, hit two home runs. AT SALEM COURSE Mrs. Graham P. Sharkey and Mert Hcmenway won first place in the two-ball ladles' choice handicap held Sunday by the Salem Oolf club. Mrs. H. H. Olinger and Harold dinger placed second, Guy Smith and Mrs. Baker third, and Mrs. Ouy Smith and Tad Shelton fourth. SEATTLE SPLITS SUNDAY GAMES TO WIN SERIES By Associated Presg Junk Walters, Seattle pitcher, looked back today on the teat of pitching two Sunday baseball games against Portland, the team that sold him for $1000 at "old junk." He was only fifty percent successful, how ever, In his private warfare, winning the first game 4 to 2, but dropping the second 0 to 4, Elated by the promise he would be allowed to pitch the second game if he won the first. Walters started out well. He allowed seven hits, the same number his teammates gather. ed, but Seattle made two safe blows in the fifth inning count for three runs, which cinches the game. De spite a scorching sun, "old Junk" did well In the second game until the seventh inning, when Portland touched him for three runs. The In dians gathered only four hits. Seat tle took the series four to three. Los Angeles beat Hollywood 6 to 4 In their Sunday afternoon game af ter losing the first six games of the series. The Stars won the first half of the doubleheader, 3 to 1. In the first game the Stars got six safe hits off Letwj Herrmann, three of them bunched in the seventh Inning, while Fred Ortman held the Angels to four scattered hits. Los Angeles won the last game by gathering five hits from two pitchers in the seventh and final inning to tally four runs. The tall-end Missions gave the downtrodden Sacramento Senators two more setbacks. 10 to 9 and 11 to 8. In the opener the Missions tied the score at 9-all with six runs In the seventh inning, and pushed over the winning tally in the tenth. In the seven Inning nightcap the Reds scored six runs in the eixth to put the game on ice. Oakland took the opener from the Seals 2 to 1 when BUI Ludolph, Ac orn pitcher, drove out a single to score the winning run in the 12th inning. The Seals won the second game, 3 to 2, when Hunt, right field er, hit a homer with one on In the final, seventh Inning. HILLSBORO PLANS WALKING CONTEST Hillsboro The annual champion ship walking contest, which is the sporting feature of the "Happy Days" celebration, July 2, 3 and 4 at Shut, park, Hillsboro, wilr" leave the Portland hotel promptly at 8:45 cn the morning of July 4. Cash prizes amounted to $150 are being offered. The race this year has attracted 15 entries from Portland, 24 from different parts of the state as far away as Bend and Toledo, as well as entrant from Washington and Id aho. The rules of this year's race have been eliminated and applicants can adopt any manner of walking or running. This change has at tracted more entrants, and met with the approval of those who enjoy this kind of sport. FINN1GAN HERE FOR JONES BOUT Pat Finnegan, who says he did not run out on his match with Henry Jones recently, will return to Salem Tuesday night for an engagement with the Utah farmer. Failure to notify Finnegan of his contest here Is said to have caused the mixup. Jones has won from Finnegan as the result of previous engagements but the handsome Irishman believes he can reverse the decision Tuesday night. The other half of the evening's performance will be a match be tween "Bulldog" Jackson, known for his rough tactics, and Art Smertz. Smertz was beaten by Jones a week ago after he had injured a rib when he fell from the ring. ANGEL LOSES TO WOODBURN IN CASCADE GAME Woodburn The Woodburn Cas cade league ball team won over Mt. Angel, 6 to 0, at Mt. Angel Sunday in a quiet game with a fair croud in attendance. Johnny Beck pitch ed a good game for Woodburn with C. Manning as catcher. Batteries for Mt. Angel were Welton, Wolf, and Paul Relling. The most spec tacular play of the gam. was when Bomhoff of Woodburn caught a dif ficult fly, running from center to let ield and throwing a man out at the home plate. In the sixth Inning ML Angel made three bits but no scores, Woodburn will play Newberg at Woodburn next Sunday. PIRATES WIN, The Salem Pirates of the Mid Willamette baseball league defeat ed Mt.
