HOPEWELL AID TO ENTERTAIN AMITY Hopewell The Ladles' Aid of the United Brethera church met at the church Wednesday for their weekly meetings. They quilted a star quilt for Mrs. Heider and also did some work on one for Mrs. Campbell. Lunch was served at noon, and plans talked over for the next meeting when the society was to be hostess to the Amity clvlo service club March 10. Amity had been hostess to the Ladies' Aid of the U. B. church some time ago. Members present were Mrs. Josie Rogers, Mrs. Ellis Lynch, Mrs. Heider, Mrs, Mary Holdrlcige, Mrs. Jennie Allison, Mrs, Mary Rich, Mrs,. HIGHWAY IMPROVED Lincoln It Is reported that road grading will be completed from Lin coln on the river road as far north as the Stratum farm during this year. Crews have been busy along this stretch of road removing brush and burning It for soma time re cently, COMEDY AT PRATUM Pratum "Deacon Dubs," a three act comedy drama, will be given at the Pratum school Wednesday evening at 1:90 o'clock. The school li being assisted by some outside talent. There will be special sing ing by Max Schrelber and a quar tet from Bnlem. I . ... . BOYS' NOME IS TURNER PRIDE Turner The Turner Bars' mem orial home of the Eugene Bible uni versity Is one of the most Interest ing and beautiful services in Marlon county, as it gives an ideal home and "big brothers" helping hand to 24 boys. Mrs. C. H. .Tease is the ex perienced matron and Her. EUmore J. Gllatrap 01 the Turner Christian cnurcn is the promotional manager. Mrs. Jesse has lull charge of the details of the home as to the care and training of the boys and their physical, mental and moral develop ment. Jesse was for some time also in the employ of the home but has accepted a business position. Alt ho he Is not officially connected with uie nome his experience and keen Interest render his assistance very helpful. Wjilette Jesse, the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Jesse is a senior In the Turner high school. New developments of the farm properties of the home are under way. Several miles of new fence have been built and a new barn to being constructed. Spring plowing is being done In preparation for crops to be put in. Ail of this work is interest ing to the boys who are looking for ward to a profitable and enjoyable time this summer. The community is coming to have a preat pride In this splendid work being done at the boys' home. WOMAN'S CLUB HAS AFTERNOON PARTY Sola The Eola Woman's club met at the home of Mrs. W. G, Oherke Wednesday afternoon. After a busi ness meeting (brie tables of "500" were in play, following which re freshments were served by the hoet- , assisted by Mi's. E. L. Herrell and Maxlne Ferguson. Mrs. Herrell received high score and Mrs. Leda Maggee, consolation. Club members present were Mrs. L. PuKh, Mrs. Robert Brown, Mrs. L. A. Ferguson, Mrs. B. I. LOAN FUND BENEFIT IS OFFERED MONDAY Monmouth The Business & Pro fessional Women's club of Mon mouth has undertaken as a part of Its program, the sponserlng of a loan fund for normal school stud ents. In order to raise money for the fund, the club has arranged a St. Patrick's "500" party which will be held Monday. The party will held at 8 o'clock In the legion hall room, over the cty hall. Awarding of prizes to the winners and reXre&limenUi are to be part of the entertainment for the evening. The ticket sale is be ing conducted by Mrs. Marie Miller and Mrs. Walter Smith. SERVICES FOR FORD MEMORIAL WILL CONTINUE West Salem Rev. Robert Bry- mer will preach both Sunday morn ing and evening at Ford Memorial church. There will be special mu sical numbers arranged by J. 8. Frtesan, The revival services will continue each evening next week at 1:30 o'clock. The meetngs are growing In at tendance and Interest and num ber of people have accepted Christ as their aavlor. Rev. Brymer Is bringing some very inspiring and helpful messages and the varied musical numbers have been much enjoyed. The afternoon Bible study gath erings at 3 o'clock have been well attended, also the children's meet ings which Mr. Brymer conducts af ter school hours. There will be special musical numbers each evening. Tuesday night a men's chorus will sing sev eral numbers. There will also be negro apirltusls ' sung by Messrs. Fresan, Brymer and Kelde,. ' Sermon subjects which Rev. Bry mer has selected for next weke are "The Greatest Need of the World,' "The Big Appointment," "Ruined,' "Nothing To It," "Unprofitable Lives" and "A Oreat Detective." GIRL' IS HONORED BY ACADEMY ANNUAL Sllverton Miss Met Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim John son, wss the first girl ever to be elected to manage the publication of the annual lor the Laurelwood academy. She Is now soliciting ad vertising for this annual In Port land, Hlllsboro, Gaston and Forest Grave, Miss Johnson will be gradu ated from the academy in May. NEW OFFICERS ARE NAMED BY CHURCH WOMEN BISHOP SUMNER TO TALK AT WOOBURN Wooburn Bishop Walter Taylor Sumner will confirm a class of six at St. Mary's Episcopal church on Sunday evening at 7:30 o'clock and will also preach. He will be assist ed by Rev. George Herbert Swift of Salem and the large choir of St. Paul's church. Following the serv ices a reception will be held In honor of the bishop at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Powell. ST, PATRICK DANCE PLAN OF SODALITY Woodburn The Young Ladies' Sodality of St. Luke's parish are sponsoring a program and dance on St. Patrick's evening. March 17, commencing at 8 o'clock. Immediately following the program popular music will be furnished by Smith's orchestra of St. Paul and the remainder of the evening will be spent In dancing. The entertainment will be given In St. Luke's community hall. Hazel Green The Women's Mis sionary society met recently at the nome of Mrs. Ann ienrmsn. Mrs. Iris Van Cleave was leader while Miss Leila Luckey conducted the de votional services. A round-table discussion on missionary work In various countries was held with Mrs. Pearl Van Cleave, Rev. Leila Luckey, Mrs. Ann Lehrman and Mrs. Mary Wampler leading the groups. The "wonder box" questions were read and discussed by Miss Ruby woodard. As this meeting was the last of the church year election of officers was held, resulting in the following: president, Mrs. Iris Van Cleave; vice president, Mrs. Louis Wampler: secretary, Mrs. Pearl Van Cleave; treasurer, Mrs. Era Luckey; secre tary of literature, Miss Ruby Wood ard; secretary of thank offering. Mrs. Will Davis, and secretary of siewarosnip, Airs, uuy ixxtney. Delegates were also elected to at tend the Pacific coast conference to be held at The Dalles. Those chosen were Miss Ruby Woodard. Leila Luckey announced a mission ary Institute which will be held In Salem March 26 at the Castle U. B. church. Bishop Warner will be one of the main speakers. This will be .1 all-day meeting with a pat-luck dinner at noon. .Members present were Mrs. Era Luckey, Mrs. Nellie Reed, Rev. Leila Luckey, Mrs. Louis Wanipler, Mr. Pearl Van Cleave, Ikiiss Ruby Wood ard, Mrs, Ellen Van Cleave, Mrs. Iris Van Cleave. IRISH CONCERT SET Liberty William McGilchrist, Sr., will repeat the Irish concert given at the Salem Y. M. C. A. recently at the Liberty hall Friday evening, March 21. The entertainment will begin at 7:30 o'clock. Dorothy Judd will have charge of an Irish booth. SCHOOL ENJOYS PARTY Dayton Lois Wilson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Wilson, was honored on her Uth birthday at the Wheatland school Friday afternoon. Mrs. Wilson served refreshments to the school. AURORA CLUB WOMEN GUESTS AT HUBBARD Auburn The Auburn Community club will be assisted by the "Cubs," Auourn dramatic club, Friday eve ning, March 21. There will be I basket social with Harry Martin of Macieay serving as auctioneer. The Cubs will present a three act play entitled. "For the Old Flag." which will start promptly at 7:30 o'clock. No admission will be charg ed and all proceeds from the bas kets will go to furnish the school kitchen and stage. Between acts the following mu sical numbers were given: violin solos by Beryl Ottaway with Mrs. Lowell Davenport as aecompaniest; piano solos by Mrs. Olenn Howe; vocal solos by Mrs. Glenn Parrish with Mrs. Olenn Howe at the piano, and songs by the Brush Creek Croakers. Til play, which was directed bv Mrs, Martin Doerfler and Mrs. Theodore Grace, was well carried out. J. C. Larson as a "comic strip" Englishman was particular ly good, and Mrs. Dan Hillman as Sally Oraham, the Cyclone Sally of the play, was equally so. Fred Krug as Willie Clump was also ex cellent, as In fact were all of the characters. The entire cast Included Jack Webster, owner of the Webster estate, Dan Hillman; Reggie Man ners, a young Englishman and an adept at picking peaches, J. C. Larson; Jim Jerkms, courted for 20 years but not yet discouraged. John Moe; Willie Clump, Sue Bos- com's beau and the world's eighth wonder. A short business meeting was con ducted and the special committees for the month of April were ap pointed as follows: program, Frank Weinman and W. A. Starker; spec ial refreshment committee, Mrs. Harry Bennett And Mrs. W, R. Daugherty. The entertainment for the eve ning was furnished by the Salem Heights community club In the form of a comedy entitled, "The Family Affair." Between acts the five characters sang "The Utah Trail" and entertained with a dancing number and with several violin solos. The program for the April meet ing will be furnished by Dr. David B. Hill of Salem. A 15-mlnute com ic picture will be shown for the benefit of the children and the re mainder of the evening will be spent in moving pictures of out door life taken by Dr. Hill. There will be no charge for the evening admission. HUBBARD LIKES OLD TEACHERS; GIVE CONTRACT Hubbard All the teaching per sonnel of the Hubbard high school and the grade school were offered contract by the Hubbard school board jitter, the recent school board meeting with the exception of one teacher.. The second grade and the first grade will be combined under on teacher for the 1930-131 school year, thus eliminating the second grade teacher. Teachers elected are Prof. J. R. Btdgood, principal; English and French teacher. Mra. Adeline Fields; commercial .teacher. Nellie Cornell all for high school work; Arthur Meyers, seventh and eighth grades and athletic coach; Mrs. Arthur Meyers, fifth and sixth grades; Mra. Lottie Fry, third and fourth grades; Mrs. Lorena Dun can, first and second grades. According to reports submitted by the principal to the school board Uie 1029-1930 school year has prov en most successful, all class work and school activities having gone on smoothly. An outstanding fea ture of the year's work was the or ganisation of a Junior orchestra from which players will be picked to fill In vacancies to the high school orchestra as graduations occur. A similar new group Is planned for the coming school year. A program by the eighth grade students and the teachers will be held April 11 and 12, places to be announced late. The proceeds will be used to defray the graduation and track meet expenses.
