REBUKE FOR PARTY CHIEFS (Continued from pin 1) chief executive "to appoint men to public office who will execute toe law, of the United State, with In tegrity and without fear, favor or political collusion. "I note your demand," the letter said, "that the organization shall dictate appointments In Florida Ir respective of merit or my responsi bility and that you appealed to the opponents of the administration to attack me. The success of the repub lican party rests upon good govern ment, not on patronage." The chief executive wrote that Hughes was especially competent in the enforcement of the prohibition law and that all of the federal Judg e In Florida had attested to his ability and experience. Britten replied to the president assuring nlm of the cooperation of the party organization. HOOVER GREETED BY POURING RAIN (Continued from pag 1) era was called the "Sam Hill" and on each side of the headlight were the words "The President." The name on the tender was "At lantic and Quit R. R." Th. president with Mrs. Hoover then posed for pictures with tha en gineer, William T. Black, whom Mr. Hoover greeted warmly. Mr. Hoover showed Interest in a nearby saw mill where an old time saw was humming aa It cut up the cordwood lengths for the locomotive. Turning back to the station, Mr. and Mrs. Hoover received the dis tinguished guests who had been In vited here by MT. Ford for the go), den jubilee celebration. They Includ ed Owen D. Young, chairman of the board of the General Electrlo com. pany: John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Gov, ernor Fred W. Green of Michigan, and several others. Then there was an Inspection of the red brick station, brought Intact from Its original site not far from Port Huron on the Port Huron-De. trolt route. It was at this station that Edison was discharged as a newsboy and began his career as a telegrapher. A drizzling rain fell throughout the reception at the Smith's creek station and the president left off his formal clothes, wearing a dark gray overcoat and a pearl gray fedora hat. As the party started for the Ford home, President and Mrs. Hoover entered a town car with Mr. and Mrs. Edison. Mrs. Hoover relinquish ed her place on the back seat for the famous Inventor, who rode beside the president with Mrs. Hoover and Mrs. Edison on the folding seats in front. GOVERNOR WELCOMES The purpose of the visit was to receive an official welcome irom Governor Fred W. Green and Mayor John C. Lodge, but It gave the people of Detroit their oppor tunity to glimpse a president for the first time in more tnan a ae cade. Throughout the long drive the president's car passed through an almost solid lane of humanity lin ing both sides of the beautiful Oakwood boulevard. Men, women and children were heedless of the elements as they strained to get a view of the president and Mrs. Hoover, nor was the rain suffi cient to dampen their enthusiasm. All along the line, tne cmei executive received an ovation, with the crowds cheering and automo bile horns and clappers adding to the din. At some places cadets of Detroit high schools with their col ors were drawn up at attention and at others little school children wav ed tiny American flaga aa they screamed their welcome. IIOOVKB SOAKED Here and there band broke Into music and aa the procession passed the Fort street Presbyterian churn on west Fort street the chimes In the tower played "Amer ica." Although both Mr. anad Mrs. Hoover had raincoat thrown about their shoulders during the drive they were fairly wot upon arriving at tne city nan. me president's gray fedora was soak ed with water running from the brim aa he doffed his hat upon en tering the door of the brown stone city hall. In this building Mayor ixnge aa Dresented to Mr. and Mra. Hoover and escorted them a short way to the main entrance where a covered olatform had been erected Mr. Hoover was given a tumultous welcome by the thousands of spec tators, most of them stood In the rain without protection even of umbrellas. Governor Oreen. who had wel. corned the president upon his arrival at Dearborn early In the morning. stepped forward to the microphone but It was more than a minute be fore he could make himself heard above the din. I have thought It a fitting thing. as the governor has said, for the president of the United States to take part in paying honor to one of our great Americans, Thomas A. Edison. 'Mr. Edison has brought to our country great distinction throughout the world. He has brought benefac tions to all of us and it la but a small thing we may do to record the appreciation, esteem and honor In which the nation holds him. "Detroit la fortunate. It la to be the point where the nation pays tri bute to Thomas A. Edison and I wish to thank you again for your cordiality and the courtesy of your welcome. Thank you." After the city hall ceremonies the president and Mrs. Hoover drove back to the borne of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ford at Dearborn, foUowlna the same route as on the Inward ride.
