The ' duty of the police is to prevent " children from throwing papers ' about the school grounds or doing . anything ei'-e to mar the neatness and sanitation of grounds, playshed or school buildings. ' A reading club has also been or - ganlzed. This was tried last year with considerable success. The t club officers have charge of the . ordering the books from the state ' circulation library. ' SILVERTON CHURCH 1 IS PRESENTED CASH Sllverton The local Methodist Church was given a gift of $1200 by two local people who do not wish to make themselves known. With this money carpets are to be pur chased for the auditorium and the league rooms. Heavy felt will be laid underneath the carpet Several days ago this gift was put before the board, who unanimously accept ed U. New steps leading from the street to the church auditorium doors will also be built Immediately one side only as the other side was built new last year. CHESTER DAVIS HOST AT BIRTHDAY PARTY Sllverton Little Chester (Bumby) Davis, younger son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Davis, was given a party Saturday evening, the occasion be ing his eleventh birthday. First there was a theater party, after which all sojourned to an ice cream parlor where refreshments were served. Among those who attended were Inez Reynolds, Graham Preston, Janet Ballantyne, Marjorle Hubbs and Harold and Bumpy Davis. MRS. BUSBY HOSTESS - FOR CLUB MEMBERS T Independence Mrs. E. H. Busby , was hostess to the U-go. I-go club at her home In North Independence : on Friday afternoon. The guest rooms were decorated with pink and white cosmos. Mrs. W. B. Stoweli, was taken very 111 the early part of the week and was taken to a Salem hospital by the attending physician, where an operation was to be per formed as soon as her condition is favrable for It. Mr. Hughes, an aged resident of tills locality who has been in poor health for some time, Is now con fined to his bed and his condition is critical. Mrs. Louise Madden from. Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Godkin and family are located in the Elnfeldt house and are planning to move the present building back a num ber of feet and build on quite an addition. Mr. and Mrs. Ray J. Stumbo of Rosemont avenue, were Thursday business motorists to Portland and return. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Davidson, the past week, re turned to their home near Leban on Sunday. Hampton has been convalescing at the Davidson home alter returning from the Lebanon hospital where he was taken when Injured in fall at the Ford mill. Welsenberg has been confined to his bed or the past five weeks with a severe attack of pleurisy, following intestinal flu. Although Improving slowly It will be several weeks before Welsenberg will be able to leave his bed. He Is under the care of Dr. Gerald Smith. STREET Bsah Dank RIFLE EXPERTS GOING STRONG FOR SILVERTON Sllverton At the meeting of the Sllverton Rifle club Friday eventng in the basement of the armory the following officers were elected: President, M. L. Inghram; secre tary, Ed Kottek, Junior. There are now more than 30 mem bers, 5 of them being women. Ten of these members win be picked to qualify for the National Rifle asso ciation which is sponsored by the United States government and which furnishes ammunition, guns and targets to this association. The next shoot will be held Fri day evening, November 1, when three prizes will be given for 'men and two for ladies on that evening for high scores. Some of the best scores on last Friday evening are as follows: Inghram. a 49 target; Mrs. Roy Davenport, a two 2 target: Roy Davenport, a 50 target: Bill Olsen, a 40 target; Ruth Kotek, a 27 tar get. PEDEE RESIDENTS OFFERED FAREWELL The Ira DeWitt home was the scene of a party Friday evening when friends gathered in to wish them well in their new home in Corvallis. The car hit between a large truck and its trailer, driven by Harold Russell of Sheridan. Russell applied the brakes on the rear wheels of the truck in pre paration to make a left hand turn at the Intersection, while Stock well reached the Intersection from the opnoslt direction lust at the time when the four-wheel trailer slid around directly accross his path. Tne damage to his car was esti mated around $250 00. though both vehicles are covered are covered by insurance. AIRLIE Mr. and Mrs. Hayes Richardson have moved from the Kerr place to Albany. RUSHED TO HOSPITAL Donald Alvln Wallace, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Wallace, living two miles south of here, was taken sud denly 111 In school. A. E. Feller took the boy and his mother to the Wil lamette sanitarium In Salem. He was found to be suffering from ap pendicitis, and an operation re vealed the appendix had bursted. Alvln Is doing as well as can be ex pected. VENUS CHAPTER MEETS Donald Venus Chanter No. 1M O. E. S., held regular session on Friday evening. Teachers in Gervals union high school are Prof. Brehaute, Prof. Stewart. Mrs. Helen EstudUla, who have been with tne scnool tnree years while Miss Herman and Mrs. Vernon are the new teachers. Mr. Dave Moses and Miss Martin are also new teachers in the grade school. A program was given consisting of a piano solo, Florence Durette; vocal solo. Ruth Palmer; reading, Carl Francis; Instrumental duet. Misses Hayes and Weiss; reading, Catherine Mutter, and ft vocal solo by Monica Schwab. Prof. Brehaute acted as chairman and during his talk stressed the need of a larger building to care for the large enrollment of students which Gervals union high school has this year, as lack ot space Is hindering the teachers from giving the number of studies asked by the students for the reason each teach er must double on classes for lack of space teaching one large class.
